Ugh, I noticed that Ecosia’s results got considerably worse recently. Then now I want to check and they’re now grabbing results from Google instead of Bing. Their Help page says I should have a config to choose if I want Google or Bing, but I don’t.
The Google results are fucking awful, wtf. Wtf happened to google in the last few years, that’s wild.

Moving away from Google and big tech has been both fun and surprisingly easy. Here are some of the recent switches I’ve made:

Gmail → Proton Mail
Google Drive → Proton Drive
Chrome → Vivaldi
Google Search → Ecosia
Google Home → Home Assistant
FB Messenger → Signal
ChatGPT → LeChat (Mistral AI)

For streaming, I’m exploring ArteTV alongside other free Scandinavian services.

I’m also looking into Plex as a long-term alternative. Seems like I’ll need a NAS for that—any recommendations?

After some reading and thoughts, I have refreshed my ~15 years old browser + search engine setup. And the winners are @Vivaldi and Ecosia (and a note on @Qwant).

As a Netscape/Mozilla user, I can't remember when I became a Firefox user but really early on. All this time it has been my browser for everything (first) and then for personal use (see below). I have collected stickers, I have met Mozilla Foundation staff, and I even applied a long time ago. +

So, to kick off our interview series, let's dive in with Christian Kroll, the big boss over at Ecosia. This cool German search engine actually plants a tree each time someone uses their search engine.

It's a really nice interview where Kroll chats fluently in German, French and English with Ecosia users and employees, and answers all kinds of questions about the company.

You can also check out the Ecosia channel on YouTube, where you'll find loads of videos of tree-planting all over the world.

It's an incredible project and a very interesting concept. Let's hope they keep innovating... and planting!
