Most of the galaxies in the universe rotate in the same direction. Why this happens highlights a gap in our understanding of how the universe works. My mind is still a bit blown from #Euclid telescope images last night.

When I zoomed in on a tiny patch of sky — field of view: 7.1' x 3.6, which is about the size of a grain of rice held at arms length — there was so much to see.

Walls and walls of galaxies. And then more walls of galaxies behind this.

Each galaxy hosts hundreds of billions of stars and there are millions of them, all, in this tiny field of view.

We are tiny tiny creatures.

In the next few months, from its perch atop a mountain in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will begin surveying the #cosmos with the largest camera ever built.

Every three nights, it will produce a map of the entire southern sky filled with #stars, #galaxies, #asteroids and @supernovae — and swarms of bright #satellites ruining some of the view.

Galaxies in Space

The plane of our Milky Way galaxy extends beyond the limb of planet Earth in this space age exposure captured by astronaut Don Pettit. His camera, with low light and long duration settings, was pointed out the window of a Dragon crew spacecraft docked with the International Space Station on January 29. The orbital outpost was at an altitude of about 400 kilometers above the Pacific Ocean at the time.
