A general #softwareengineering question, when using the word #embedded how do you distinguish between embedded as in #firmware vs #embedded as in in process like a programming language like #lua that is used in a game engine or a database like #sqllite or #duckdb that (can potentially) run in the host application. As in do you use different terms like #embeddedsystems or #EmbeddedSoftware to refer to one or the other? Or am I completely off base here?

It's like stepping back into the past "Welcome to Internet Explorer 8!" and "You need Adobe Flash 9 to view this webpage."
Chris( @stoneymonster ) and Elecia( @logicalelegance ) spoke with ecologist Dr. Meredith Palmer and embedded engineer Akiba about lions, terror, conservation, and technology.

Meet Divine, a GNU/Linux Phone powered by Rockchip’s RK3588S. Divine D. will be our first variant, completely open for development, testing and debugging. It will bring interesting features on-board, from local AI to multi-standard connectivity. We also develop DawnOS, a mobian-based distribution tailored for our hardware, including custom Kernel and device tree.
Check our documentation base for more:

I wrote a processor-agnostic introduction to DMA. It includes two metaphors and an adventurer's map.
If you want better understanding of how DMA works and how to set it up, please take a look.
Granted, @OS1337 has a different target mission, which is to be a #KISS-principled, easy to build, extent and adapt basis for #Firmware and #Embedded Systems...
Or to power some #security-focussed #EmbeddedSystems where having #ReproduceableBuilds is part of the #transparency culture I aim for.
One day, after all the years we've had it, our Subaru just stopped working.
That is to say, it wouldn't start: the instrument panel flashed like a marquee and the gauge needles flailed like they do in a mad-science scene in the movies.
A web search suggested to turn the ignition key on and off a few times.
And that did the trick. Happy ever after.
So who knows?
Computers. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.
Deus ex machina.
One of the most fundamental yet little-known features of FreeBSD is its ability to be used in read-only mode very easily. By installing the system on a UFS file system, you just need to modify the fstab file, change "rw" to "ro," and reboot. On the next boot, the system will automatically create mount points in RAM for the main directories (/tmp, log, etc.), and it will run perfectly.
This was the main reason why, many years ago, I chose FreeBSD for almost all my embedded systems. Even today, on my Raspberry Pies, I keep the SD cards in read-only mode and use external storage in read-write mode. This ensures that, in case of an unexpected poweroff, the system will come back up, and there will be no wear on the memory card.
Tangents aside, people are free to create forks and even branches that include #SystemD or use #BusyBox:
That is the #Freedom of #FLOSS and in fact for anything outside the 1440kB target we'd accept #SystemD since it works and solves a lot of issues...

Granted OS/1337 isn't a #demo first but rather tries to take the concept of #tomsrtbt and @w84death 's #Floppinux and tries to make it something that is useable and can be extended to arbitrary complexity if one desires to...
It's about making a tiny #Linux distro that is #reproduceable and #auditable...
It won't replace @ubuntu or any other big distro, likely it won't even replace #mkroot from #toybox but it should be a clean and level foundation for small #IoT and #EmbeddedSystems projects and products...
Something that is easy to build and customize and port to other platforms...
And we're open for contributions:

New #eReaderCarrierBoard & #eReaderHat #UI features. Now you can add a #calibreserver directly from the #GUI. Not the prettiest design, but its functional. #selfhosting you're own book server is slowly becoming more practical.
Viel Spass beim Lesen!

Quick video showing new features for the #eReaderHat and #eReaderCarrierBoard. This clip showcases the #raspberrypi #computemodule4 but there's another #PCB in the HAT form factor. The #hardware now supports a touchscreen, backlight, as well as a lipo battery. Pretty happy with this revision so will be working on #firmware in the near future.
Will post documentation in the thread below.
The Embedded Online Conference call for talks closes on Friday. It is entirely online! Conference is in late April 2024.

@davidshq I think this move contributed to #Microsoft's failure to successfully move into #hardware platforms with considerably less resources than a #PC or #laptop (ie. #mobilephones, #tablets, #EmbeddedSystems).
They hardwired so much of the OS functionality into the clunky GUI, it took them too long to re-engineer the whole damn thing for other platforms allowing Google and Apple to dominate.
