Bookish Crochet: ereader cover

I’ve made an ereader sleeve in crochet before (you can check my post here), but with wool, not very comfortable for Summer, so I decided to make another one in cotton.

Recently, I was looking at patterns for wash or dish cloths (a good way to reduced plastic at home, just make sure the yarn is 100% cotton) and found the Cottage pattern by Sarah from Rich Textures Crochet on YouTube. It’s an easy and quick, but beautiful pattern that uses a puff stitch, giving some padding to the ereader. You can make it in a square or rectangle and any size, you’ll just need the foundation cord to be a multiple of 3 + 2. Check Sarah’s video, she guides you through the whole process and if you prefer written patterns, you can go to Sarah’s website here.

So, I thought if I made two, then I could stitch them together and had a sleeve for the ereader.

It fits perfectly, but I probably should have made one or two more rows so I could sew a button. I can still add a strap if I feel it needs it, but for now the ereader doesn’t come off by its own. Sarah adds a stunning border with a picot, but I thought I would sew them with a simple crochet.

Did you know I studied electrical engineering besides work? On Thursday, I finished my bachelor's thesis with the final presentation and it's time to finally present my project: ZEReader, a microcontroller-based E-Reader.
Inspired by the Open Book Project by Joey Castillo, I designed my own platform from scratch. My focus was on building a reader usable in everyday life that is capable of handling books in the EPUB format. The project is still in a very early phase, but it shows great potential, and I have lots of ideas for future revisions.

You can follow the project's journey and see its current state at marx.engineer/zereader/ and the linked GitHub repos!

And of course, a special thank you to @aislerhq for producing and sponsoring the PCBs!

Fuck DRM. I will never buy another eBook again. Just accidentally authorised my laptop without an Adobe account for Adobe Digital Editions, forgetting that i wouldnt be able to upload it to my eReader.

I erased my authorisation thinking I could just sign in with my shitty adobe account, and now its locked me out of my book entirely.

I'm pirating every single book I read from now on, and I'll buy a physical fucking copy from a local book store as compensation. FUCK. #books #reading #ereader

TL;DR:

I've just installed a page turner on my #ereader , so I can read and keep my hands warm under the blanket.

I don't know if that's the height of decadence or a necessity for readers in the #Canberra winter.

I just found out that there are people who have been switching from Kindle to Kobo because somebody somewhere said that it's indie and now there are people who think that's true. Friends, Kobo is owned by a Japanese billionaire and under the umbrella of a huge Japanese conglomerate.

While it's true that it started out as a small company in Toronto, it's most certainly not indie now (and hasn't been for many years). I hope that wasn't the main reason you chose it as your alternative, because you were lied to.

Disclaimer: I have a Kobo device and I buy the majority of my ebooks through their store. This post isn't a moral judgment. I'll just feel bad if somebody chooses it as their alternative based on false information.

I got a hand me down 2015 Kindle Paperwhite from my daughter—is that a hand-me-up?—after we upgraded her to a new Kobo Libra Color.

I used #WinterBreak to jailbreak and got #KOReader installed and it’s a nice little reader that syncs easily with Calibre. No Amazon involved.

The Kobo Libra is an extremely nice #eReader with great integration with Overdrive/Libby to get library books, but if you’re looking to get something on the cheap and save some ewaste, I can recommend jailbreaking a kindle
