CherishedThoughts<p>I've been a coder off and on for 8 years. I enjoy programming, but I've always enjoyed crocheting way more. But I could never truly find the balance between the two, until now. Coding isn’t always cold and clinical. Sometimes, it spirals into something poetic. I used a rose curve and some trigonometry to visualize the art of crochet with code.<br><a href="https://fiberartsdecoded.blog/blog/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">fiberartsdecoded.blog/blog/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://me.dm/tags/computerscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerscience</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/crochet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crochet</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/Java" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Java</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/Processing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Processing</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/rosecurve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rosecurve</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/formula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>formula</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/algorithms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>algorithms</span></a></p>

NegativePrimes<p>This is fascinating! Programming language as a means of understanding Lacanian philosophy. This reinforces something I'm increasingly persuaded of, that computer science and programming languages exist not merely for computers but more importantly as a means of understanding how we think about how we think. Cornelius Flynn<p>When I first installed Linux at home (Slackware, 1993) for University Unix work/compatibility I had to buy an extra 4MB (yes, MEGA BYTES) of RAM to run it on my PC taking it to a massive 8MB of RAM, with a 150MB Hard Drive, and 3.5” floppy disks for backups. (My older system used 5 1/4” these new ones seemed slick by comparison)</p><p>That 4MB stick cost me over 100UKP in 1993. </p><p>These modern systems are absolutely immense, and cheap, by comparison. <br><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/slackware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slackware</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unix</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/university" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>university</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/computerscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerscience</span></a></p>

Rachel Wil Singh ~ Moos-a-dee<p>Computer Science as a degree is kind of weird. Most people are training for software development jobs but it doesn't really teach software development skills.</p><p>Community colleges have job oriented certs and stuff, but as far as universities go, it's pretty much still just CS as an option, right?</p><p>Like a CS degree generally doesn't have stuff like source control, APIs, dependencies, etc. as curriculum - it's a degree for how computers work at a base level.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ComputerScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerScience</span></a></p>
Peter Drake<p>What are the "essential" skills that computer science students need? I think they need to understand coding, algorithms, and other parts of CS well enough to ask the right questions (of an LLM, search engine, or other human), and understand and validate the answers. Perhaps a useful frame of mind is: "Eventually you will be supervising people or machines. You need basic technical understanding, critical thinking, and project management skills."</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/pedagogy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pedagogy</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CSEd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CSEd</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ComputerScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerScience</span></a></p>
