People in the Fediverse often say that #socialMedia without #algorithms that are programmed for profits let them feel calmer and better.
Algorithms of the big platforms can make people indeed ill. More and more influencers or social media #creators get #burnout symptoms: "There’s no off button in this job. The algorithms never stop. You can’t pause the internet." theguardian.com/media/2025/jul

@heybran define "algorithm". Technically, all software is an #algorithm. But if you mean "algorithmic feed" then, kind of. Algorithmic feeds are when the software chooses which posts are included in your main feed based on characteristics of that content and not just your following list. #Mastodon does this with hashtags. It doesn't choose those hashtags for you, which makes it a very customizable "algorithm". There's also the Explore tag, which has an "algorithm" that's chosen by your instance.

Latest release of #FediAlgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, lets you blur / hide images marked as sensitive / #NSFW, which solves the "unwanted dick pics in your feed" issue that can come up when users of one of the more "risque" fediverse servers manage to make one of their favourite hashtags trend.

"My #algorithm knows I’m #Jewish.

It knows that I light candles on Fridays, that I overstay my welcome on videos with #Hebrew text, and that I once clicked “like” on a clip of an IDF soldier singing “#Shalom Aleichem.” Now, my “For You Page” — a personalized content feed on my social media — is a buffet of #Torah, trauma and trendified #Talmud."

J. · Social media shapes your identity, even your Jewish oneAlgorithms reward extremes — the flashy, the provocative, the viral — not the nuanced or the complex. Judaism will suffer for it.

new release of #Fedialgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, counts the number of times each hashtag appears in your timeline even if people don't use a "#" character to give you a better sense of what people are talking about in the Fediverse.

there's a little bit of art vs. science here because some strings are disqualified from this kind of counting (e.g. a word like "the" should not be counted even if some maniac decided to make it a hashtag) so let me know if you see any weirdly high counts.

#FediAlgo will now let you filter your feed by the server your timeline toots are originating from. You can also choose whether to color highlight hashtags you've participated in or favourited and some other fun stuff.

How is any sensible discussion about the merits or flaws of a system possible in such a space? It just isn't all it does is absolute polarisation in order to push algorithms to put the content in front of us. And we are pushed to mindlessly consume it, because that's all we are now. Consumers.

Fuck this. I hate it.

Addendum: If a person always looks so upset in a thumbnail of a video that you think he is anally probed, that's a red flag right there,

Now they are producing hate reviews of the device. It sucks, of course. The controller sucks. Didn't get a pro controller because the price sucks. The games suck. Nintendo sucks. You suck if you bought it and like it. Everything sucks.

Mario Kart World? Worst Mario Kart game, even the SNES one is better.

Battery life sucks, even if it's better than the Steam Deck.

Download speeds suck even if plenty tests show otherwise.

Everything needs an update! (Their claim)

Switch 1 games don't even run better on this (absolute nonsense)

And this will continue. These people will buy more games to produce even more hateful content. And people will watch it, encouraging this behaviour.

This is what the algorithm does to people. Hate and negativity wins. We loose.

i think i had my first truly positive #AI experience... i asked it to write code comments that could be transformed into API documentation for #Fedialgo, and other than the part where it repeatedly and strenuously suggested deleting all the most important parts of the code, it actually did a pretty good job.
