"What I have come to realise, in a selectively quotable phrase that will be catnip to the conspiracists, is that my #Jewishness is informing my #journalism. And, perhaps more strangely to some, my journalism is informing my #Jewish identity.

This, I grant, is a change. These are words I never thought I’d think, let alone utter. What’s changed is that I’ve changed.

Back in 1944, Jean-Paul Sartre wrote a short book on #antiSemitism. It’s at times brilliantly incisive, at others clankingly off. One of his more penetrating observations is that #Jews can be “over-determined”. He meant that their motives are always under scrutiny. And that, in itself, can be disabling: Jews can feel trapped in the cage of others’ preconceptions."

"Five #Jewish #comedy legends who reshaped the ‘#90s.

The 1990’s provided a major shift in the tone and style of #comedy in #America. Observational humor took the place of the simple set up/punchline. The classic sitcom evolved from the traditional escapades of mistaken identities and tired tropes that dated back to the 50s. Even sketch comedy took a bold, experimental approach that embraced mind-bending randomness.

At the core of all the innovations were Jewish #comedians. Obviously, Jerry Seinfeld's iconic show Seinfeld would be top of the list. So in the spirit of subverting expectations, here are five great Jewish comedians of the #1990s that aren’t Jerry Seinfeld."

The originator, and still greatest practitioner, of American Jewish history as a field of study.

"[Sarna] “carefully and with nuance demanded that #American #antisemitism had to be understood ‘on its own terms,’” Nadell said at the #Brandeis symposium. “More than four decades later, in our very different moment, we must heed that clarion call to the particularity of the #Jewish experience in the U.S.”

Sarna agrees that those were some of his most influential articles. “#History has very much vindicated my cyclical approach to antisemitism, as opposed to those who felt that antisemitism, like anti-Catholicism and anti-Mormonism, would become simply a #historical subject, a relic from the past,” he said."

#Trump Friday morning claimed he was unaware that the word "Shylock" is #antisemitic, after using it during a Thurs night rally in Iowa.

#Shylock, Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice”villain, was written as a greedy & vengeful #Jewish moneylender who eventually is forced to convert to #Christianity.

Trump said: "Think of that: no death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks & borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker. And in some cases, Shylocks & bad people."

The NSW Legislative Council launched an inquiry after a number of #antisemitic incidents in Sydney.

What's next?
The inquiry is set to hand down its findings by September."

In separate incidents on Friday evening, masked pro-#Palestine #protesters stormed Miznon, an Israeli restaurant in Hardware Lane, while the historic East Melbourne Synagogue was the target of an attempted #arson attack.

Restaurant patrons were left terrified as around 20 masked protesters entered Miznon about 8.30pm, chanting “death to the #IDF” while hurling chairs, glasses and food at the windows, according to the Herald Sun. One of the restaurant’s front-facing windows was smashed with a chair."

"President Donald #Trump employed a term often used as a #slur against #Jewish people as he blasted bankers during a speech in Iowa on Thursday evening. The remark came as he was touting tax cuts in his so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Congress passed earlier in the day.

“No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker and in some cases s#hylocks and bad people,” Trump said, adding, “They destroyed a lot of families, but we did the opposite.”

"On Wednesday, Sullivan County Legislature Chair Nadia Rajsz echoed Billig in denouncing Sunday's incidents.

"These #assaults clearly were #antisemitic in nature, inexcusable in every way, and instilled fear in the #Orthodox #Jewish community, whom we are proud to call neighbors," Rajsz said in a statement. "This Legislature will not minimize, nor stand for, such displays of hate in Sullivan County, and we fully support local law enforcement's efforts to expose and prosecute the perpetrators."

#Jewish #cooking in #America closely follows American cooking in America,” says Jane Ziegelman, author of 97 Orchard, about the #food traditions of immigrant families who lived on #Manhattan’s #LowerEastSide near what is today the Tenement Museum in #NewYorkCity. But one thing that distinguishes Jewish #cuisine from those of other ethnicities is its lack of ties to one specific place. Since ancient times, Jewish food has absorbed the ingredients along the #diaspora trail. “Jewish food is tied to where #Jews are,” Ziegelman says. “It’s a really flexible cuisine.”

Interesting little history about the time the Soviets sent a couple of their Jews to visit our Jews. I skipped to the end for the perfect pull quote. :ablobcatwave:

"The paper’s final mention of the event was a snippet recalling that, when asked about the #Soviet position on #Palestine, Michoels and Feffer responded, “#Stalin will always be on the side of ‘yosher.’”

Coming into #Yiddish from #Hebrew, “yosher” means upright and is used in an ethical sense. It’s a haunting pronouncement, in light of the tragic epilogue.

In 1948, having hardened his views concerning #Jews and #Jewish culture, Stalin ordered the death of Michoels.

Four years later, Feffer was executed for “counterrevolutionary crimes” along with other Jewish intellectuals, all active in the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, on what became known as the Night of the Murdered Poets."

"#TheodoreRoosevelt had a thing about the #Jews. Not just the uptown #Manhattan Jews whose families had immigrated from Germany and Austria-Hungary in the middle years of the 19th century, people whose Reform #Judaism was tidier to the gentile eye than were the shuls of the #LowerEastSide. These were Jews whose prosperity made many of them business colleagues and political bedfellows of #Roosevelt and his Republican Party.

But Roosevelt’s #philosemitism extended deeper, into the Lower East Side itself and its #Yiddish-speaking, tenement-dwelling Jews whose crowded apartments and sweatshops drew the concern of social reformers such as the Danish-born pioneer photojournalist Jacob Riis.

Roosevelt befriended Riis, and as #NewYork’s head police commissioner from 1895 to 1897, he spoke to downtown #Jewish audiences, advocating the progressive cause of hiring by merit."

"#Jewish #food, and especially #Ashkenazic Jewish food, is slowly but steadily returning to the country, where many of the dishes actually originated. The comeback is driven by a growing interest from #Polish people in finally facing their country’s past.

This is certainly the case with the #bagel, with bakeries all over #Poland serving them. But other foods are reappearing as well, such as the #knish, or knysz in Polish—a bun filled with kasha, potatoes or cheese."
