Sea Palm (Postelsia palmiformis) is a species of brown algae and one of the few seaweeds that can stay upright out of water. It spends most of its life cycle exposed to air, thriving in wave-battered rocky shores.

We have a similar problem over here 🇳🇱 . Not so much in the sea but in th rest of our ample waterways. The proven culprit is intensive agriculture and Chemical fertilizers.
But the Ausis know that already now the Yanks have to come up to speed.
Neither here nor there wants to change their ways.

A harmful algae bloom off the coast of South Australia, caused by high sea temperatures and runoff from flooding, is poisoning marine life and depleting oxygen in the water. The Australian government has stated that there is little that can be done to reverse the rapid rate of the climate crisis"

How Berlin engineers made swamp into swimmable lake

Engineers restored water quality in a once a severely polluted #urban #lake, Berlin #Schäfersee

The small engineering firm developeda treatment method to combat foul odors & oxygen depletion caused by decaying organic matter

Their method not only neutralizes odors but also unexpectedly reduces #phosphorus levels, which helps prevent #harmful #algae #blooms.

We need your help keeping an eye out for #algae blooms in the Bay 🦠

As the weather heats up, conditions will be ripe for harmful algae blooms (HABs). After a devastating #HAB in 2022, we ramped up our algae monitoring program and now have a team algae sampling across the Bay Area through the summer.

But we could always use more eyes on the Bay 👀 If you see coffee-colored water or unusually red or bright green water in the Bay, take photos, note down the time & exact location, and reach out to our pollution tip line: baykeeper.org/report-pollution

Photos: First two photos are of brown-colored water during a small algae bloom in #Alameda in 2024 that luckily dissipated quickly. The third photo is a close-up image of the alga Akashiwo sanguinea 🔬 and the last image is of our team collecting samples from the Bay #algaebloom #harmfulalgaeblooms #sanfraniscobay #bayarea #sfbay #waterpollution
