Matthew Booth<p>I feel like the important bit of <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Agile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Agile</span></a> is that you produce shippable features regularly (i.e. every Sprint) which results in a rapid feedback loop. If that's your goal, then many of the ceremonies associated with it are useful ways to stay on track.</p><p>However, what we seem to get in practise is the ceremonies. This is arse-about-face. The ceremonies don't cause the rapid feedback loop. They are useful tools available if your goal is already a rapid feedback loop. If you're doing them when you aren't already laser focussed on shipping features rapidly for a rapid feedback loop they're just a fucking pain in the arse. I think this is why corporate Agile almost always fails.</p>

While it feels masturbatory to describe all software as craft I think the nature of software is repeatability and absence of human labor, which in plain terms means that any task that can be trivially reproduced quickly gets automated, leading to a heavier blend of bespoke tasks. This means things like trying to optimize cycle times and predict task duration are materially not the same as manufacturing.</p><p>Anyways, that's part of my soap box rant about why planning and sprints don't fucking help, rather select and scope your accepted tasks really well. If it's genuinely something that the business values, it matters less how long it takes, rather that it's done correctly to achieve the outcome.</p><p><a href="https://eigenmagic.net/tags/Agile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Agile</span></a></p>
