"He is one of a growing number of people who are actively resisting: people who are terrified of the power of #generativeAI and its potential for harm and don’t want to feed the beast".

People refusing #LLM + #genAI + #AIslop become more, with good arguments: theguardian.com/technology/202

Including the author: "this piece was handcrafted using organic words from my artisanal writing studio. (OK, I mean bed.)"

‘We can’t say we didn’t know’: Israeli #academics demand end to war on #Gaza

Unlike other domestic letters protesting against Israel’s war on Gaza, the academics’ letter centres on the #suffering of Palestinians. More than 1,200 Israeli academics have issued an open letter calling on the heads of Israeli academic institutions to “speak out” and act to stop the war on Gaza.

In the letter released on Tuesday, the academics, who identify themselves as the Black Flag Action Group, claim that, since #Israel violated the #ceasefire in March, almost 3,000 people have been killed in Gaza. The vast majority of them, the writers say, were civilians. In addition to the growing numbers of people killed by Israeli fire, the authors note, are the warnings of acute starvation being forced upon Gaza as a “result of intentional and openly declared Israeli government policy”.

The ban on #InternationalStudents would also impact #HarvardLaw's Juris Doctor [the graduate program for every #lawyer in the #US] & Doctor of Juridical Science programs. Each #JD class of 560 typically includes 45 to 50 intl students—about 9%—for a total of about 150 #students spread across 3 classes. The #SJD, which is for aspiring #legal #academics & typically has ~60 people enrolled, also draws heavily from overseas.

“We cannot claim that we did not know,” the letter adds. “We have been silent for too long. For the sake of the lives of innocents and the safety of all the people of this land … if we do not call to halt the war immediately, history will not forgive us.”

Others do so by sanctioning the crimes and justifying them, before and after the fact, and by keeping quiet and silencing voices in the halls of learning. It is this bond of silence that allows clearly evident crimes to continue unabated without penetrating the barriers of recognition.”

“This is a horrifying litany of war crimes and even crimes against humanity, all of our own doing.”

Fellow #environmentalists & #academics: I am the book review editor for Global Environmental Politics, and I have a book from a major academic publisher examining the ideas, flows, and relationships around unmanaged discards in India.

It is an ethnographic study of contestation and neoliberalism around waste management. I am currently seeking a book reviewer to write one for this text. If anyone is interested, please DM me.

I picked up a Boox e-ink tablet device for school. I hope to help reduce eye strain and migraines.

So far, I’m rebuilding how I study and read course materials. Using the tablet has cut my screen time on other devices by about 50%.

Yes, typing and navigating on e-ink is slower, but that’s part of the trade off. I’m actually starting to enjoy it. With my hyperactive ADHD, I go 100000% the speed of light sometimes and I need to learn to slow down my processes. This might be one way to help with that while also protecting my eyes and reducing migraine triggers. So, yay! 😃

Finally, he sought a list of additional #unredacted agency records—including all GEC #grants & #contracts, as well as subgrants, which are particularly sensitive due to risks of #retaliation to subgrantees, who often work in local #journalism, #FactChecking, or pro-#democracy orgs under repressive regimes. It also asked for “all documents mentioning” the #ElectionIntegrity Partnership, a #research collaboration between #academics & #tech that has been a target of the #RightWing.

Question for the academic bubble on the fediverse: I'm thinking about finishing my PhD (or rather starting a new one). I'd love to combine the topics tech-philosophy and literature. Any idea on how to find a paid position? I'm currently living in Vienna Austria. A remote position abroad could definitely an option.

RT welcome.

A lawsuit filed in NH late Friday aims to present a sweeping legal challenge to the #Trump administration’s campaign targeting #international #students & #academics.

Lawyers asked a federal judge to certify a lawsuit brought by foreign students whose #visas were canceled as a class action.

The suit aims to to stop similar #detentions & #deportation efforts for students in NH, ME, MA, RI & Puerto Rico. It also asks the court to reinstate the student #visas that have been terminated.

#Race information disappeared on #OPM site that displays #statistics for public on 2.3M #federalemployees. For decades OPM has provided #Congress federal agencies, #academics w personnel data that helped shape #policies, #funding and #staffing decisions. Without the race information, those groups will not be able to easily track how #Trump’s workforce cuts affect minority race groups, including #Black and #Asian employees, #academics said. #censorship #discrimination #government #maga #politics
