I'm translating #Scots dialogue in R.L. Stevenson using https://dsl.ac.uk/, and when I look up rare words I find that they cite the story I'm translating.

I have an urgent #translation job to finish so of course I'm writing blog posts about #translators and #AI

I want to #work with [you] people in the #Fediverse !
Translating your articles, #proofreading your #writing, doing #research for your video essay on a 20th century philosophical school, teach you one or two #languages, doing admin for your educational non-profit, exchanging broader knowledge around politics, humanities, literature, helping sell you woodcarving art pieces...
but above all I want to make #art and creative things with you.
I run out of options and ressources to find "normal" work IRL where I live, or escaping to study in Europe,
and it is in part because I had already started being too influenced by people on here to be able to continue accepting the dire conditions offered in my immediate environment,
but also, I joined here because I did not really belong in said environment already.
so the thing is, I can only do the things listed remotely, online, for now.
Anyone interested?

Hello, fellow followers of #PortfolioDay!
I am an English and German into French translator with 14 years of experience. I am specialised in the fantasy genre, mainly for video games as you can see below.
I have also worked on a sourcebook for the French version of The Dark Eye, the famous German fantasy TTRPG.
If you want to have your game or TTRPG localised into French, let's talk!

#WritersCoffeeClub July 8: Have you ever received feedback on a piece that completely missed the mark?
The only thing that comes to mind is: "Have you ever considered using #AI -based #translation for your work?"
While yes, my writing work is all about translating all German folk tales, the actual "translation" aspect is the least part of it. And even here I don't see AI-based translation as particularly helpful, since the 19th century texts I translate are full of obscure idioms and dialect words that AI translation would struggle with.
But more importantly, when I translate these texts I have to think about the _context_ of these tales - the 19th century environment in which they were set and told. And then I have to research and explain this context to an international audience.
Can AI do _this_ part for me? Without constantly hallucinating blatant falsehoods? I have serious doubts.
No, if I want to do all this _right_, then I have to do this work by myself.
Still looking for some English > Portuguese translation help! Nothing too sophisticated, just some playful dialogue. Boosts welcome!

Despite this importance of language, it is hardly discussed in treatises on early modern diplomacy. This is somewhat surprising, as it was helpful, if diplomats spoke different languages, as they did not have to rely too much on translators. This reduced the risk of misunderstandings and espionage.
But it is difficult to assess how many languages early modern diplomats actually spoke and probably varied vastly. In many cases they were dependent on interpreters and translations; a topic that only recently got the necessary attention in research. (7/8)

Akira Otani’s “The Night of Baba Yaga” is a genre-bending novel of violence and tenderness that defies easy categorization. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2025/07/04/entertainment-news/akira-otani-the-night-of-baba-yaga-crime-writing-award/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #culture #entertainmentnews #japaneseliterature #akiraotani #sambett #thenightofbabayaga #translation #lgbtq #yakuza
The "new" @thisdoesnotcomp intro sounds way more #80s #Synthwave but that's not necessarily bad.
Why are there still so many posts from both individual posters and entire instances where translation is neither offered nor allowed (http 403 or 503)
Certainly if #Mastodon wants to compete as #SocialMedia on a #GlobalStage translations into the reader's stated Interface Language should be mandatory, unless explicitly prohibited on an individual poster-by-poster basis
What gives?
As it is now, I #Mute and #Block posters who will not let me translate their posts into a language I can read
Why do I want to give up my very finite screen space to posts I'll never be able to read?
I don't, and I won't
I'm on an instance currently running v4.3.7
