#ReadLater

As we’re hard at work on the next big update — bringing major improvements to caching and content extraction (including better support for paywalled and multi-page articles!) — let’s take a moment to look back at what Couch delivered earlier this year, starting with version 4.0, which introduced iCloud sync alongside Pocket (a huge addition — especially with Pocket shutting down!) and other improvements.

🚀 Couch 4.2 is here!

Now available on the App Store with:

✅ Pocket Migration – uses the API to include much more metadata than Pocket’s official export (like favorites and other)
✅ Unlimited items for everyone – the 25-item iCloud limit for non-Pro users is gone!
✅ PDF support
✅ Read Aloud improvements (iOS/iPadOS) – now with language and voice selection

📲 Get the update: apps.apple.com/app/apple-store

I guess it's a good time to add a #Pocket import function to #Flyleaf, so that's what I'm doing. If everything goes right, version 2.3.0 will come out really soon.

This update will also include the most new features since 2.0, and especially it will make the optional subscription more worthwhile (but thanks if you're already subscribed anyway, it means a lot!)

Here are a few sneaky peeks at what's coming.

#Pocket is dying so it's appropriate to talk about the minimal #ReadLater service I wrote for myself: LinkFodder.

You can save links via an API, or a form, or a Telegram bot, and you get an HTML page (shown below) and an Atom #feed. That’s it.

Supports multiple users, written in #Haskell, deployable as a single binary (or a Docker image) behind the reverse-proxy server of your choice in your #SelfHosting setup.

It doesn't even need a database to run; it simply rewrites the HTML and Atom files when you save a new link.

I relapsed... I got back into #RSS and spent several hours over my break going through unread feeds, unstarring articles in #Feedbin, and decluttering my feeds by unsubscribing to some I don't read

I can't help but feel like I wasted time doing that but I also feel like digitally decluttering is productive. After all, I apparently have 100,000 starred articles in #Feedbin :blobcatsweat: I think a lot of that was filters that cast too wide of a net that built up especially after I took a long break from RSS.

It also probably came from starring things that could easily have simply been bookmarked instead. I found out yesterday that I could unstar articles through the API. Maybe I can write a program to help mass unstar articles since neither Feedbin nor #Reeder (classic) have multi select.

This was more of a ramble but if anyone has tips on helping me wrangle my RSS feeds and saved/read-later articles I would love to hear them!

Linkwarden vs Wallabag vs Obsidian Web Clipper
Yes Omnivore is gone so today we're going to take a look at 3 other options for saving articles to read later.

Linkwarden

Wallabag

Obsidian Web Clipper

My biggest issue with all of them is how poorly they handle YouTube content. If you've got other options I should look at I'd love to hear about them.

#PKM #Obsidian #ReadLater

The lovely read-later app, Omnivore, is shutting down after being acquired by AI voice startup ElevenLabs. They’re deleting all accounts and info on Nov 15th.

I was using Omnivore a _lot_ for TTS reading, as well as highlighting, note-taking, and its excellent integration with Obsidian, and I’m sad to see it absorbed into an AI startup that seems to have very different goals, and no respect for user continuity. Such a frustrating disruption to my ADHD-augmented reading and research workflow. 😭

Anyway, I’m in the market for a new read-later app with good TTS, note-taking, cross-platform support, and Obsidian integration, I guess! Willing to pay to support a business that intends to stick around. Not interested in self-hosting. App suggestions welcome!
