#RIPE

I'm pushing for #RIPE to go #IPv6 only for the API and control panel, and surprise there are folks saying they don't have IPv6.

These are "professional" network operators. 🤦‍♂️

Companies like @aaisp have been providing IPv6 connections in the UK for over 20 years now.

Let's set a date and switch this legacy stuff off. It's holding us back.

@fosdem I was asked privately for the "how", and figured a public reply makes sense

ripe.net/publications/docs/rip is the policy.

Fun fact: The extra time around an event used to be 1-2 weeks, and this was distilled pain as I had to chase #FOSDEM #BGP upstreams to update sessions, filters, etc and usually needed to escalate through to last level support

Before automation and the Cloud, a new #BGP announcement took days to weeks by default

So I got the #RIPE policy changed and extended to a month :)

I love the optimism of this spam email which I'm paraphrasing as "Soon everyone will be using IPv6 and so your IPv4 addresses will be worthless. Sell them now while they still have value":

Very soon IPV6 blocks will be used instead of IPV4 blocks.

In this process, do not hesitate to contact us for the sale of your IPV4 blocks in your inventory.

We can buy your IPV4 blocks with our fast buyers worldwide

@jimsalter The #ripe atlas nodes that @allanjude mentioned on #25admins do exist all over the world - for example, here’s the round-trip time to a bunch of fixed destinations: atlas.ripe.net/results/maps/rt

They "recently" (meaning since I last checked) also implemented a software probe, that you can throw at your hypervisor: atlas.ripe.net/docs/howtos/sof

So now there’s no excuse :flan_evil: :flan_cool:

👏 Big shout out to Marco Schmidt and Rene Wilhelm of RIPE NCC for their insightful article on the concerning trend of IPv6 stockpiling, a phenomenon Spamhaus has observed for some time.

Schmidt highlights, "Lastly, we should also consider that such blocks might attract actors who prefer to operate discreetly. For instance, they may intend to use these IPv6 blocks for spamming or other malicious actions. [..] As a regional Internet registry, we are accountable to competent authorities and governments, which places upon us the responsibility to ensure that the resources we steward are not misused or abused."

Although it's great to see RIPE NCC acknowledging this issue, it will be interesting to see what steps will be taken to address the problem of rampant misuse/abuse of network resources in the RIPE region.

RIPE LabsIPv6 Stockpiling: A Trojan Horse in Our Midst? The current combination of RIPE policies and rules for RIPE NCC membership enable IPv6 stockpiling. And what might sound like an unlikely activity is not only happening, but is actually on the rise. Here we look at the trends and some of the potential consequences and ask where we go from here.

"Getting public IP address ranges routed on the Internet is no rocket science. It does, however, involve steps (including paperwork!) and concepts that are probably unfamiliar to administrators who are used to private routing domains only. This guide tries to explain what’s essential to register public IP prefixes for an organisation and make them reachable globally." jlsksr.de/docs/isp-guide/
