4yo has had a great day:
- we fed calves and Highland cows at the farm (where there was much poo and many animals covered in poo)
- we did swimming for 2 hours and he got to ride the big slide by himself (about 50 times...)
- he rode a horse for the first time and not only was there a lot of poo but the horse stopped partway through the ride to do a wee
- we shared two big scones
- he told a lot of people at the cafe and the restaurant about all the poo

"A growing body of fiction and film ... deals with farmers' threatened way of life and their increasing unrest as a result of policies meant to curb climate change or temper its effects," writes Bartolomeo Sala in The Dial. Here's his story about "Creation Lake" by Rachel Kushner, "Cosas Vivas" by Munir Hachemi, "As Bestas," directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and "Alcarrás," directed by Carla Simón. "The conflict between farmers and the green transition is a new phenomenon," Sala says. "Yet the way that recent works of fiction portray this conflict often feels remarkably familiar, playing into an old idea of the countryside as a remnant bound to be destroyed by the march of progress."

Texas farmers, ranchers lose billions to 2024 weather disasters

The total incurred damages in Texas was over $3.4 billion.

Drought and excessive heat contributed to more than 66% of Texas’ losses. The most severe drought impacts occurred between June and September.

Texas cotton farmers saw $1.8 billion in losses, and there was a loss of $768 million in forage and rangeland damage and $257 million in wheat losses from drought.

Early in 2024, the Smokehouse Creek Fire caused $123 million in losses, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. It was the largest wildfire in Texas and burned more than 1.2 million of acres in the Panhandle.

Rural Banter in Cork

Tucked away on the serene Sherkin Island in County Cork, I stumbled upon a timeless moment that felt plucked from another era. Two older men, clearly no strangers to the soil beneath them, were deep in conversation.

This photo was taken in 2015 while on a visit to the island. I hope they are still living on the island, chatting away.

Honest agriculture is local and regional. It is not factory farming. It is not trying to grow water intensive crops in the desert.

It is food security by more traditional means, not corporate profiteering. Not necessarily without tools, but definitely without disregard for the present and future growing conditions. Honest agriculture is reality based, focusing on the needs of the community.
