#ProTip: if you toot successive sentences beginning "Potting up…" and "High time…" you might just gain some unexpected followers!
But anyway, time with a second extremely large whisky in hand, to sink like hot knives through butter into a piping hot bath!
And BTW, rest in power Martin Slavin, amongst other talents a gardener who knew his weeds.

#ProTip if you ever think using 2 day UPS shipping with shopbeam.com will be a faster way to get your order, think again…

…placed two orders last Friday and the one that is coming USPS is coming today…

…while the one coming UPS never left their warehouse and is "stuck in fulfillment process”…

…and to boot i was saddled with a customer service rep who is either dishonest or a moron or both…

…never will i ever try using 2 day UPS shipping again

Today's random baking #protip

If you want a shiny, crackly surface to your bread but have a hard/impossible time getting it (like I do, I have a gas oven and it's near-impossible) you can get one with a quick starch glaze. Mix flour and water in a 1:10 mix (1g flour per 10g water), nuke it for a few seconds and stir to properly gelatinize the starch, and brush it on the loaf before scoring and popping it in the oven.

You get a lovely, shiny crust. Mmmm, tasty.

#ProTip: if you have to use #Google (for $reasons 👀), add custom search engines to your web browser to avoid the #AIslop summaries at the top of the results page & / or to constrain to recent results only (to avoid irrelevant older info for technical queries, etc.)

Google doesn't let you disable "AI" (🙄) summaries unless you first log in to Google, so if you refuse to log in (or just don't have an account) then by default you're stuck with it 😫

but wait! there's a solution (for now, at least)

for no "AI" (🙄) slop summaries but all results from the beginning of time, use: google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14

for no "AI" (🙄) slop summaries & only recent results, use: google.com/search?q=%s+after%3

&udm=14 is the magic param that gets you web results without the garbage "AI" (🙄) summaries up front 💁‍♀️

after:2023-12-31 gets you results from 2024 onwards only (tweak as required)

in desktop browsers you can assign a shortcut to use in the search bar - I use [@]g for all results & [@]gn for recent results but you do you 🙃

(the [ ] here are just to prevent tagging in someone on masto, remove when you add the shortcut 🤪)

the %s syntax for query string works in Edge & Chrome (so it should work in any Chromium-based browser) as well as Firefox

@mosgaard @amadeus if you just want distraction-free editing, you may want to look at #VScodium [1], #neovim [2] or even #NvChad [3] for editing depending on how you feel like and what suits you best.

  • I recommend using #Markdown for Text until you want to turn it into something printable (unless you know #LaTeX), but noone's gonna judge you if you prefer @libreoffice to get a script written.

If you want or need to switch computers rather often, consider buying a SATA (or NVMe) - SSD with DRAM-Cache and a matching external enclosure and install your #distro of choice on that instead, as unlike #Windows, basically all #Linux distros allow installations on external drives.
-Don't forget to use #FullDiskEncryption!

If you need to share your work with others or sync it across devices, consider @nextcloud / #nextcloud.

  • If you don't have any admin already in your organization.and it's permissible but you don't want to setup your own, consider @monocles / #monoclesOcean and @Stuxhost for a fully-managed Nextcloud at reasonable prices.

As for #audio I'm shure you know #audacity and #LMMS...

If you use the terminal rather often, consider setting up some nifty aliases to make things faster.

  • For example if you want to just check if something is reachable, i.e. internet / network connection works, consider adding function isup() { ping -a -b -c 1 -D "$@"; } to your .bash_aliases file in your $HOME directory so if you use i.e. isup duckduckgo.com it'll do a single run of ping to reach said domain/FQDN/IP...

But the final #ProTip I can give you is to #backup your $HOME-directory under /home/yourusername because in it's hidden subdirectories, espechally $HOME/.config/ are usually all the settings for your applications stored so in case you need to setup a new machine or restore one from backups, this is where all the minor changes of yours to make your system work best for you are being stored.

  • You may need to press Ctrl+H IN THE File Manager to see hidden files.

  • For backups, tools like #DéjàDup make it easy to setup, backup and restore your files as you want or need, including encryption and deduplication.

I hope that'll help you not only get started but also get the maximum efficiency out of your distro as a creative tool without fuss.

#Garmin #Protip - Fed up with the gratutious price gouging and eternal "Waiting on stock" lead times for GPS units in AU - you can open-box factory refurb stock from the EU.

Garmin don't preinstall global maps on their units, but just grab micro SD card (32gb cards work fine, I'd suggest avoiding cards over 64gb) and and head over to garmin.opentopomap.org/ for free, OSM based topographic map layers already formatted for Garmin devices.

Download the ZIPs for the maps and contour layers for AU (or anywhere else).

Create a folder on the SD card called "Garmin" and copy the contents of the zip files to it.

Bung the card in the GPS unit, and you now have a local device with much higher quality maps than the Garmin Topoactive ones.

Sweet.

This got me an Etrex 32x in open box but completely unused (unit still in the original plastic) shipped from Europe for $200, and for the sake of a $10 SD card is actually better than a brand new local unit.

@DoomsdaysCW #ProTip This is bullshitty clickbait. Energy prices aren't "surging", the power industry bosses have stated quite clearly that nuclear is no option for them, and that the closed reactors' disassembly has progressed beyond the point of no return.

Merry greetings from Germany ;-)
