Definition: non-binary

A person whose gender does not entirely fit into the binary categories of gender (man or woman) in modern western society. Someone who does not identify as being solely and completely a man or woman.

Used as an umbrella term for all people outside of the binary gender identities, as well as a gender identity itself.

Some gender identities that fall under the non-binary umbrella: agender, androgyne, bigender, demigender, genderfluid, genderflux, neutrois, polygender.

Just in time for #NonBinary Awareness Week, my new copy of Proud Pink Sky by nonbinary author @redfern arrived in the mail today. My wife and I read it late last year from the library and decided it was a book we wanted to own to reread. If you have an interest in alternate history (particularly of the #queer variety), check it out yourself! The hobby linguist in me also enjoyed picking up the argot scattered through it.

Happy International #Nonbinary People's Day friends beyond the binary! 💛💜🖤
We exist and tiny minded people failing to comprehend the fact changes nothing.

As its our day, today WE get to be the main characters in #Fantasy, #Romance (queer & genre-blends) and #SciFi, in this bundle of #books by mostly nonbinary authors.

Happy International Nonbinary People's Day!

My people, the Houma, have recorded queer and nonbinary/trans peoples met and written about since colonization began, from the early 1700s and before.

This is not new. It is reclaimed from colonial genocidal forces. It has survived, and so will I, and so will my people.

Yesterday I asked for some ideas for casual expressions as an alternative to girlfriend/boyfriend.

In the image (alt text included) are some of the English terms people like to use to refer to a person they’re romantically with/dating without specifying the gender.

I like the idea of “my person”. If I was still in the very early stages of dating I might just say “the person I’m dating”.
There’s so many ways to speak about someone without specifying the gender if using their name isn’t an option.

Many queer people are used to being cautious about coming out to people so many of us are practiced at not specifying gender when speaking of people we’re attracted to and/or in a relationship with, but many cis-hetero people are not. Safety isn’t as much of an issue for them.
In Canada and US the terms “co-parent”, “partner” or “spouse” are being used more often by everyone of any gender or sexuality but sometimes those terms just don’t fit the situation.

These are just some options to fill that gap.

#NonbinaryAwarenessWeek

You enjoyed the Week of Non-Binary Awareness and learned so much about our culture and practices, but now it's Friday 14 July, the Day where all People are Non-Binary!

You have twenty-four hours to try out the many skills you have learned.

Shave a random part of your hair for the first time!

Wear clothes with garish patterns! If you didn't obtain some during the op-shop tour on Awareness day two, borrow something from one of your partners!

Be overly indecisive about trivial decisions such as picking out a dessert at the corner cafe while there is a line behind you!

Give a random noun as the name for your coffee order to test how hearing it makes you feel!

Over-commit yourself tonight by RSVPing to a friend's 'birthday party' (actually their HRT anniversary), a meeting run by the local trans group who are organising a protest for tomorrow, and a dance party with a theme that is so vague that it inspires you to be creative and construct your own outfit this afternoon out of materials you had laying around and clothes you have not previously matched together!

Somehow attend all three events, and volunteer to take up a lead orginsational role at tomorrow's rally.

Today is the most important day on the non-binary calendar, but tomorrow may be the most important for you! Reflect on all that has happened, and how it felt taking off the metaphorical costume and putting on the new, haphazardly constructed one.

Consider if this just a fun thing to do every year, or if this may be for you long-term.

Have a great day, and make yourself comfortable!
