This cold winter, with all these polar vortex incursions, is costly even for an efficient home. Approx $500 a month would be spent on electricity if it weren't for solar and net-metering.
The strongest vortex of the year is starting today, with below 0f expected. I bet we approach $30 per day this week.

Winter is fully here in Maryland. The heat pumps have been running continuously for hours. It's 18f outside, and will get much colder with the vortex. 6-8 inches of snow tomorrow will cover the solar, so we'll be operating off our banked kWh with the utility, of which 4MWh remains. Thankful we have that much since I don't expect the solar to melt off for a week or more. If I really had to I guess I could find a teenager to broom off the ground mounts

· Direct the PSC to undertake a "Cost of Service Study" for net metering customers. Rather than a "cost benefit analysis" this study would only let the PSC study the costs associated with net-metering and not allow them to factor in the myriad of benefits that net metering has on the grid and for customers. This cost of service study would then be used to justify rates and fees charged to net metering customers.

"HB 643, sponsored by Rep. Josh Kassmier (R- Fort Benton) is a bad bill that would make going solar burdensome and financially unfeasible in Montana.
HB643 would:
· Put net metering customers is a separate customer class and thereby allow the Public Service Commission to set a new rate for net metering customers and charge fees and other costs that won't be charged to other residential customers.

Josh Kassmier (R-Fort Benton), would stymie rooftop solar in Montana and open the door to a number of changes to energy rates for solar users that could make going solar financially burdensome.
The bill would require the Public Service Commission (PSC) to create a separate new rate class for solar customers. This could result in higher energy rates and new fees for homes and businesses that own solar.
The bill also directs the PSC to conduct a "cost of service" study which would ignore the benefits to Montana’s energy grid that result from expanded energy generation from rooftop solar, forcing the PSC to only consider the costs to Montana’s utility energy corporations. This would bias the study against the efficiency of rooftop solar. The bill would also put a cap on the number of solar systems allowed on the grid until the study is concluded.
We oppose this bill because we believe Montanans should not be punished for generating their own clean energy, and we don’t believe the state should eradicate competition in the state’s energy marketplace.
HB 643 has not yet been scheduled for a hearing, but the House Energy, Technology, and Federal Relations Committee needs to hear from us now telling them to "Vote NO on HB 643!"
