Backhanded #climateaction?

Abundant schadenfreude, and this:
🍊 : "wouldn't mind" oil falling to $50/barrel.

That's 25% lower than current price.

Oil exec: below $60/barrel = less drilling, esp by "unconventional shale and the smaller players"
because they will make no profit on it.

Lower oil prices, less drilling.

Keep it in the ground!

🌱 Es ist Freitag. Klimafreitag.

Electric vehicles are not magic bullets, but in the U.K. the numbers speak for themselves. They reduce emissions.

In 2024, oil demand fell 1.4% despite increased road traffic, largely due to the rise in the number of EVs. The UK’s 1.4m EVs, 0.8m plug-in hybrids and 76,000 electric vans cut oil-related emissions by at least 5.9MtCO2e.

This is only slightly offset by around 0.5MtCO2e from higher electricity demand.

The UK’s EV motorists each saved around £800, on average, in 2024 – some £1.7bn in total – relative to the cost of driving petrol or diesel vehicles.

February 2025 saw the lowest global sea ice extent ever recorded for February.

February 2025 was also the third warmest February in recorded history globally, with surface air temperatures 1.59°C above pre-industrial levels.

This milestone continues a disturbing trend: 19 of the last 20 months have exceeded the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement. (audio & text)

I am going to put this out there.

When he is sworn in, Mark Carney will be the strongest Prime Minister on Climate Policy and transitioning the economy away from Fossil Fuels that Canada has ever had.

His credentials on making climate policy are nearly as strong as his economic experience.

"You have said that the goal of net zero is the greatest commercial opportunity of our time. Why?”

"Climate change is an existential threat. We all recognize that, and there’s increasing urgency around it. But the converse is, if you are making investments, coming up with new technologies, changing the way you do business, all in service of reducing and eliminating that threat, you are creating value. And what we have seen increasingly, spurred initially by the Sustainable Development Goals, accelerated by Paris, and then by social movements and governments, is societies putting tremendous value on achieving net zero. Companies, and those who invest in them and lend to them, and who are part of the solution, will be rewarded. Those who are lagging behind and are still part of the problem will be punished.”

United NationsMark Carney: Investing in net-zero climate solutions creates value and rewards | United NationsIn a recent interview, UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance Mark Carney spoke about how private finance is increasingly aligned behind achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. He underlined that people everywhere should keep up the pressure in calling for climate action. Read more here.
