Post-Dobbs Deaths
A new study from the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI) found that women are twice as likely to die during pregnancy in states with abortion bans. Twice as likely.

Meanwhile, maternal mortality in pro-choice states fell 21%. One stark comparison from the study: Texas’ maternal mortality rate was 155% higher than California’s.

Trump’s War on Measurement Means Losing Data on #DrugUse, #MaternalMortality, #ClimateChange and More
The survival of that data is now in doubt, as a result of the #DOGE's comprehensive assault on the federal bureaucracy. By slashing teams that gather critical data, the administration has left the federal government with no way of understanding if policies are working — and created a black hole of information whose consequences could ripple out for decades.

Many factors contribute to the maternal mortality in the US, the highest in the industrialized world. ...40 percent of mothers in the US don’t see an obstetrician for follow-up care postpartum. "Before the legislators voted, they knew their #law could harm other aspects of reproductive #healthcare. There was a well-publicized outcry from physicians about the proposal.

The decision to pass it anyway reveals a callousness toward maternal #health from a movement whose supporters claim to be #pro-life. #Louisiana already has one of the highest #MaternalMortality rates in the country... These laws will exacerbate a terrible maternal health #crisis on the ground."

"Two medications, #mifepristone and #misoprostol, are commonly known as the FDA-approved drug regimen for medication #abortion, but they are also lifesaving drugs used for #pregnancy complications. #Doctors rely on one or both of them to stop postpartum hemorrhage and to manage miscarriages, as well as to induce labor."

"From 2019-2022, the rate of maternal mortality cases in #Texas rose by 56%, compared w/just 11% nationwide during the same time period...

“There’s only one explanation for this staggering difference in #MaternalMortality,” said Nancy L. Cohen... “All the #research points to Texas’ #AbortionBan as the primary driver of this alarming increase.”

“Texas, I fear, is a harbinger of what’s to come in other states,” she said."
