Today I heard "Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat" for the first time. Recorded over a few days in Mumbai in 1982, the album is one of the earliest to use Roland's TB 303 synth, and arguably accidentally invented Acid House 5 years before Chicago.

You were not only a prodigy and a magician on Tabla. But someone who understood the universal nature of music and tried to bring them together. A human being of par excellence, who believed in the universal brotherhood, beyond language, nationality, color, religion and used his music to unite all.

This one was a nice surprise. I expected it to be a collection of Indian music, and it is in a way, but it’s mostly a serene and highly creative jazz approach to Chinmoy’s music. There’s no sitar. Faerman’s vocals are polished and elegant. Hendrik Meurkens sits in on harmonica. This one’s worth some repeated listenings to let it soak in. Well worth seeking out.

Beautiful Raag #Desh on a #slideguitar. The instrument is a Ghandharvi, which is basically a 12-string western #guitar with two extra chikari (drone) strings. Desh is arguably the most popular raag in #Hindustani Classical music. Ascending lines in Desh are a major scale; the 7th is flat on descending lines.
John McLaughlin has declared that Debashish “has no equal” on slide guitar.
