Today I heard "Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat" for the first time. Recorded over a few days in Mumbai in 1982, the album is one of the earliest to use Roland's TB 303 synth, and arguably accidentally invented Acid House 5 years before Chicago.

#RIP Zakir Hussain.
You were not only a prodigy and a magician on Tabla. But someone who understood the universal nature of music and tried to bring them together. A human being of par excellence, who believed in the universal brotherhood, beyond language, nationality, color, religion and used his music to unite all.
You'll be remembered for ever!

From his early days as a young percussionist to becoming a respected tabla player and teacher, Shawn shares insights into the world of Hindustani music and his innovative approach to combining traditional sounds with modern electronic music.

Happy belated birthday and much love to my dear friend and very patient teacher, #DebashishBhattacharya I hope your day was brilliant and that the coming year brings great things!
“Debashish Bhattacharya is the master of the slide guitar…he has no equal.” — John McLaughlin
Putting together promo materials for Debashish Bhattacharya’s Fall tour in the US. Dates TBA soon.
I’ve been pulling together various footage to make reels. Here’s a two-minute version.
Remember Shakti - Live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Sept. 2003 - FLAC and MP3 downloads
A very beautiful, extremely clean audience recording made from the 8th row by a friend. The drum sound is particularly realistic I think.
Lineup for this tour was:
John McLaughlin - guitar, macbook pro
Zakir Hussein - tablas
U. Srinivas - Carnatic mandolin
V. Selvaganesh - kanjira, ghatam, mridangam

This one was a nice surprise. I expected it to be a collection of Indian music, and it is in a way, but it’s mostly a serene and highly creative jazz approach to Chinmoy’s music. There’s no sitar. Faerman’s vocals are polished and elegant. Hendrik Meurkens sits in on harmonica. This one’s worth some repeated listenings to let it soak in. Well worth seeking out.
Daily #SteveKimock. When he first arrived in California he lived across from the #AliAkbarKhan College. He was always enamored of #HindustaniClassical music, and would often sit out and listen to whatever music emanating from the college.
Here he is covering one of the rare #fusion compositions by the great #sarod master himself. Playing #fretlessguitar.
Beautiful Raag #Desh on a #slideguitar. The instrument is a Ghandharvi, which is basically a 12-string western #guitar with two extra chikari (drone) strings. Desh is arguably the most popular raag in #Hindustani Classical music. Ascending lines in Desh are a major scale; the 7th is flat on descending lines.
John McLaughlin has declared that Debashish “has no equal” on slide guitar.
I'm always in the mood to share music! Here's a LOVELY #vibraphone track, sooo haunting:

I had never even heard of Carnatic (slide) mandolin before this show. Sadly master Srinivas has passed since.
A superb audience recording made in the seat next to mine. A mesmerizing show, one of my favorites out of over 1000 lifetime concerts.

Brilliant new single from #Shakti as they embark on their 50th anniversary tour.
At 81, #JohnMcLaughlin doesn’t seem to have lost a step. Bonus points for anyone who can identify the taal/meter of this tune!
❝ Charanjit Singh's back catalogue could have disappeared into musical obscurity were it not for the cult album TEN RAGAS TO A DISCO BEAT that he created in a few days in Mumbai in 1982. The album is one of the earliest records to use the legendary Roland TB 303 synth – a machine synonymous with the acid house sound – and Singh paired this with the equally renowned Roland TR 808 to create an album astonishingly unusual and ahead of its time. ❞ → https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/may/10/charanjit-singh-acid-house-ten-ragas
L. Subramaniam - "Expressions of Impressions" (1985) #NowPlaying #vinyl #vinylrecords #raga #Indianmusic #dronemusic @vinylrecords
Solo violin with droney harmonic accompaniment, with deep reverb. A must hear - see https://youtu.be/_Z385jbmzgk
Interesting trivia: Subramaniam is an older brother of the violinist Shankar, known for his recordings on #ECMRecords among others.
