someone in NY was telling me about Terry Gibbs the other week but I'm not sure who. Anyways I came across him in my research while filling out the bio of his father Abraham Gubenko, a NY violinist & bandleader who came up in some of the landsmanshaft docs at YIVO. Terry is still alive & going strong a century later.

The Forward · For a Jewish jazz great, a 100th birthday is a time for a celebration and a new albumJazz great Terry Gibbs, who was born in Brooklyn in 1924 as Julius Herbert Gubenko, returns with '1959: Vol 7: ‘The Lost Tapes.'

This SL1210 seems to be a bit pickier than the one in the living room. Or I need to give these records a good cleaning.

Anyhow, one last record before going to bed. A night cap with lots of delayed guitars, driving basses, expressive drumming and the two instruments I love most in rock music: Fender Rhodes and vibraphone.

“[M]usic was my whole life. It probably still is. I have a little radio behind me in my bed, and I sometimes put on the news. So long as somebody’s talking, I’m writing music in my head. I once wrote a song called “4 am” that came to me when was listening to the radio. I got up at 4:00 in the morning and heard the song in my head.

I had a great marriage. I have great children and great grandchildren. I love them all. But playing music was just as important to me. So was playing with the great players I was able to play with because you’re only as good as what’s behind you.” - Terry Gibbs

“I was twenty when I joined Benny Goodman‘s band. Benny was forty-two at the time. But after we played about four bars, we were the same age, you know? That’s what jazz does to you. It has nothing to do with race, creed, or age; when two people play together, that’s all that counts.” - Terry Gibbs

Read the first of our two part interview with Terry Gibbs. This conversation was captured four days after Mr. Gibbs’ 100th birthday. In part one, we cover the Dream Band, learning from Fred Albright, working with Benny Goodman and Charlie Parker, providing music for Regis Philbin and Steve Allen, and more. PostGenre - Music beyond category · Jazz Master: A Conversation with Terry Gibbs (Part One) - PostGenreSince 1982, the National Endowment for the Arts has bestowed its Jazz Master award to living legends of the music. The designation is considered by many to be the highest honor an American jazz musician can receive. Generally, the NEA has made wise choices when selecting new Masters. Tonight: hard to overstate how much top tier jazz is going down in NYC this week. Actually got shut out of shows I considered earlier/later, but in between caught saxophonist Ben Wendel's Barcode which featured not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 vibes players, one of the more unique quintets I've ever seen. The music was a polyrhythmic zone-out delight. Happy Reichian loops of all manner of malleted music. Very cool show at the Jazz Gallery.

Patricia Brennan Septet: Breaking Stretch

Not all vibraphone is light and dreamt and, backed by a killer band, Brennan takes her instrument deep, often buried deep under horns and explosive rhythms. Occasionally chaotic, occasionally straight Latinjazzgroove. Enjoy!

Kids! They wrote this whole thing down. It's on sheet music. See the pianist. Sheet music. See the sax player. Sheet music (and notes, probably).

Every freaking note & beat.

Live from Chris' Jazz Cafe:
Sasha Berliner, vibraphone
Jaleel Shaw, saxophone
Joe Block, piano
Ben Williams, bass
Justin Faulkner, drums

“Common denominators are always there, no matter the style or tradition. If you put on the radio, what makes you move your head or tap your foot to what you hear? I feel those are the elements that we can all connect to. Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with that idea. I think instinctual elements, groove, and rhythm are all very embedded in all of us. I call those elements common denominators from all styles of music, and they can bridge any gap. They are what make us react to music regardless of the style. I often try to find those elements that could connect all different styles and put them all together into one piece.”- Patricia Brennan

PostGenre - Music beyond category · Finding the Common Denominators: A Conversation with Patricia Brennan on ‘Breaking Stretch’ - PostGenreOften, one of the first things a young child learns about a band is that it divides into sections. Horns lead the melodies and craft harmonies, while percussion and bass provide a rhythmic backdrop. However, this segregation of instrumental voices relies on a deeply flawed premise built upon oversimplification. Is a tongue hitting a reed
