Thought I'd just share this old #blost (from last November/#WritingMonth) again:

Global Search and the Right to Not Be Discovered

https://rldane.space/hashtags-part-ii-global-search-and-the-right-to-not-be-discovered.html

There are very strong arguments for not having global search and quote tweets. And since Mastodon already has global search, and is likely getting quote tweets soon (or already has them), I thought it would be helpful to remind folks why they might not be a great idea (although the post doesn't actually cover quote tweets. I think I forgot about them while writing, but the point is still conveyed pretty well).

New #blog post: A Time-Traveler's Guide to Affordable Computing

Ok, I heard some fair complaints about my schlocky previous post, and this one is much more serious. Ok, what am I saying?? It's straight-up sci-fi comedy with a retrocomputing subject matter, but I took it seriously.

Initially, I was inspired by CJ's wonderful blost about his transition from being a long-term mac user to now daily-driving Linux, and wanted to share my own experiences as a long-term Mac user over nearly two decades, with a decade and a half separating the two times. But then my internal Sotolf mental processes went off and reminded me of how elitist and anti-common-person / anti-consumer / anti-human Apple was, and I went in a very different direction.

I hope y'all enjoy the humor. :D

Minor #CW: some of the humor is of a USPOL nature. It's very light, humor and presentation-wise, but the implications are pretty dark, if you take it seriously (which you're not intended or likely inclined to!)

cc: my wonderful #chorus: @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn

(I will happily add/remove you from the chorus upon request! :)

It's a lovely show. I'm working on a #blost about it, but it's quite involved (and spoiler-ridden).

The only bummer is that you can only get it on Netflix, or by purchasing the disk set.

While it seems to be spiritual in subject matter, it's 90% about ethics and philosophy, but also very accessible (it's told from the viewpoint of a very non-intellectual person). Also, the episodes are short (mostly < 30 minutes), so it's easy to "digest" in "bite-sized" pieces. (Ha, I tied it back to the OP)

It's one of very, very, very few TV shows that really got under my skin, in a good way.
