@qlp I think USA gets a different infotainment system (certainly the firmware is different) - the screen isn't too bad on the MIB2 I have but in some ways I find the general flakiness of #AndroidAuto (both the apps themselves and the interface with the car) a downgrade from the standalone TomTom navi I used for many years and agree that this isn't good for road safety, as battling dodgy software could create more distraction unless you are self-disciplined enough to concentrate on the road (in fact the reason you now have to use navi in UK driving test is not for navigational skills, but so the examiner can check you don't get distracted by it!)

Android Auto is the final Google thing I still use (with no Google apps). But tried the car's in-built system today and - actually - it was pretty good.

Only had the car for 5 years!

Android Auto now disabled. Google Services is the only Google app working on my phone now. But without any account connection and with its permissions massively hamstrung.

Just downloaded #CoMaps as an experiment - haven't tried it in the car with #AndroidAuto yet, but also found there seems to be a some delay between the app making use of an #OpenStreetMap dataset (in this case the map is 2025-06-25 ).

This is understandable as it must take a fair bit of time to get all the data across and maybe it has to be validated (otherwise trolls/vandals could end up causing all sorts of chaos) - found in the FAQ that CoMaps apparently updates 1-4 times each month (which if true seems fairly good and better than some commercial apps!)

I thought the days of USB confusion were ending, but alas, they are not. Ms. Killick uses a lightning cable for her phone and I use USB C. In her car, which we took on a 9 hour drive last week, you need USB A to connect your phone to the car. Fine-- I brought a USB A to C and she has a USB A to Lightning. Sadly, all the ports one might use to charge your phone are USB C, so I would need a USB C to C cable and she would need at USB C to Lightning cable if we were to charge our phones when the other person was connected to the car. #UX #USB #AndroidAuto

#ABRP 6.0 came out and it finally brings a magical feature: support from #AndroidAuto CarInfo API. All the cars that support it will automatically get live battery data in ABRP, just by running it as the navigation app through Android Auto. It's quite amazing, it's a shame though my #EV6 does not support this :neocat_sad:

So does anyone have an #EV supporting this, can give it a go and share impressions?

The Pine Phone Pro arrived earlier this week. After a few unfocused, false starts I finally got it booting into Gnome and currently installing Waydroid over ssh.

My wife uses a cheesey coupon clipping app (iOS/Android) for doing the groceries and such. I'll need to take a look at what traffic flows in-n-out of this app to see what is being farmed and segregate/container off if required.

We are heavy Signal users but I may use this as an excuse to set up a XMPP server. Twas on the 'roadmap'.

Initial impressions are good. Definitely not as shiny and smooth as an iOS or Android device but - it's a phone. We spent half our lives with dumb rotary dialing doohickeys - we'll survive. lol

Pretty impressed with Gnome on a touch device so far. This is my first real experience with it. No 'klunkiness' so far but just scratching the surface.

It will be interesting to see how a non-technical person takes to it. I'm going to monkey with it myself for the first week or so to find the hard edges to save her the frustration.

I want to experiment with Android Auto - see what (if anything) is possible.

I also obtained a Seeed Studio Sensecap T1000-E (meshtastic, lora, etc.) to connect to this device. We'll see how far I get with that.

I really need a staff... 🙃 Ha!

March Brings New Features for Android

Google announces four innovative updates to Android: AI-powered Scam Detection in Messages, Live Location Sharing in Find My Device, More Gaming Apps on Android Auto, and Smarter Shopping with Chrome; features aim to improve mobile experience by enhancing security, connectivity, entertainment, and shopping.

I've got quite a few albums in #FLAC , looking for a good way to stream them to my devices. #Plex works reasonably well for a local Google Home Max speaker, but I've also got another random #Sonos device... and I'd like to be able to listen to them outside the house too - preferably something that supports #AndroidAuto. Is there such a thing?

I've tried setting up #MusicAssistant, initial impressions were it's too much hassle, but perhaps it's worth the pain? (I also have #Tidal and #Spotify subscriptions, so the promise of integrating all of them is interesting)
