Help me mastodon!
Since apple maps changed names of things I would like to use a different map ap. But the thing I like best about apple maps is that it tactually does different iWatch buzzes for left and right and a few other things. Eg: my apple watch vibrates with unique patterns for turns. This is helpful due to my hearing loss and I dont miss turns anymore!

What map ap for iPhone has correct names for gulf of mexico, AND does unique vib alerts to the watch for turns?

Hey, I've got a couple of questions about the attached image.

I'm experimenting with how to have this set up. The first link has the description text just placed plainly underneath the link.

The second one uses the A BBR HTML tag to have it appear when one hovers.

My questions:

  1. Is the description hidden on hover unintuitive? I like how clean it is, but it no one sees it, it's not helpful.
  2. Can screen readers read text in an abbr tag? Cleanliness of the site is moot if its inaccessible.

thanks!

Replying so I can add the #accessability hashtag for more visibility!
It would be way easier for me to just say "whoops, just gonna be terrible for screenreader users" but if there's a not-entirely-terrible (or even just a one-time-terrible setup) way to make it accessible, I'd much rather do that! Here are a couple of examples of what I'm talking about, for additional clarity.

Musings on #accessability after doing some minor tech support for my 85 year old father.

Some of my same-age peers have told me that unlike our parents, _we_ will be able to keep up with the latest tech developments and their use, since we grew up with rapidly changing technology.

I was always sceptical of that. And in recent years, I've become even more sceptical, as important parts of our IT infrastructure - such as #Google searches - have become _less_ user friendly as the companies that maintain them try to squeeze more money out of them to the detriment of the users.

So yeah, it's not looking good for us as we approach retirement age. If you have kids, try to stay on good terms with them so that they can explain this stuff to you. If you don't, try to befriend some younger people who will put up with your tech questions.

I feel like I am missing something in iOS. I have Speak Selection set, and I’d like to quickly select all text in Safari reader view. The “select all” button doesn’t show so I currently highlight a word then drag the handle but this is tedious and prone to errors. Is there a way to quickly select all? If not, can we get this from the truly wonderful humans at Apple #accessability ?

Would like it to become a place where folks who don’t want the commitment to a whole plot can muck about and join others for an hour a week for coffee and convo or paint, think, be, based loosely on the Garden Shed idea I’ve read about in the UK, a place for community. Will need to think about how to manage it. Ideas welcome.

I just figured out about alt text!
it's the little description that you add to images to make it more accessible for people with visual disabilities, and was wondering if there is any templates on how to write alt text for art or just images in general to make it easier for people new to adding descriptions of their images?

Seeking other folx who are learning or fluent in #signlanguage or #asl or #AAC to chat with. Seeking to learn more diverse forms of communication. We use some modified asl, and AAC modeling to communicate with our little love, who communicates through her own lovely vocalizations and body language. There is so much to learn and unlearn about communication. I have been using the ASL bloom app and following folx on youtube. I especially love the Deaf Heartbeat ASL. #accessability #disabilitypride

I'm always looking for local timelines that are more concerned with #AltText.

Please feel free to share other instances where it's more or less necessary to upload content, like floss.social:

"Examples of unacceptable behavior by FLOSS.social community members include[...] :

Uploading images, audio, or video with Public visibility (appears on Local or Federated timelines) without adding ALT text media descriptions"

The more I use #chatGPT the quicker the enthusiasm for this technology dies down, even for #AccessAbility reasons, probably because I’m the only one in the universe that’s read the WWW series by Robert J Sawyer and don’t see bots like this helping for long without endless micro payments. None of this technology is going to be free, and those micro payments will get passed on to the users in annoying ways. Just moved over to this instance so I guess a new #introduction is in order!

Hi, I’m Loren.

I am a life-long nature nerd, a far left Jew, a believer in #unions and #accessability, a lover of the weird and obscure especially when it comes to music, movies, tv, video games.

I am particularly fond of photographing #birds but I also love taking pictures of just about anything else out in #nature, be it #bugs, #mushrooms, #opossums, or #prairie #plants.

I am a strong supporter of people with marginalized identities. I believe in fostering an accessible and safe world for everyone except bigots, nazis, fascists, etc. Still learning the best ways to be a part of this community but at the moment any image I boost or post will have alt text and a content warning if necessary.

TL;DR: come for the nature photos, stay for the weird memes, shitposts, and caring about people.
