March 22, 1873: John Drew, Jr., 19 years old, made his theatrical debut.

He had no trouble getting his first acting gig. After all, his mother, Louisa Lane Drew, was the manager of the Arch Street #Theatre, the most prestigious repertory company in #philadelphia.

His sister Georgiana led off the evening with the comedy "More Precious Than Gold."

John was slated for the second item on the bill, the one-act farce "Cool as a Cucumber," playing the role of "Mr. Plumper."

Federico García Lorca's first play, The Butterfly's Evil Spell (El maleficio de la mariposa) is poorly received at its première in Madrid.

With only four performances, very poorly received by the public, including booing, it was a total failure for its author. The text, written in verse, is a parable about frustration, love and death; recurring themes in Lorca's work.

I saw the opening night of this last night at The Brick here in Brooklyn, what a hoot. I'm told it's been running in London for years and quite well known over there. an extended steam-room monologue with many tangents and musical interludes and sound effects from klezmer accordion and clarinet. 😲 highly recommended
