@jalefkowit that slogan today would sound great for runs-on-RAM Linux distros like #PuppyLinux!
@ai6yr One option for those who don't want to start off by reformatting, is creating a bootable USB version of Puppy Linux.
Goto https://PuppyLinux.com. You grab an iso and burn it with something like Rufus on Windows to a USB, then boot it and you can either keep running it off USB stick or install it anywhere.
Works on any computer where you can tell the BIOS to boot from USB.
Finally copied it all, saved to my own laptop and left with hers for her to copy.
I'm sure others would have an easier way to this, but I felt accomplished that I got it done.

Couldn't find the hardware detection program so turned it off and on again. Hardware detected, searched for driver on that CD.
Not found.
Huh?
Oh.
Copied to hard drive and ran as executable and searched again.
Winner!
I love love The Internet Archive!
Tried to copy and nothing would copy. Then realized I was trying to copy on wrong part of the USB drive.

Turned it off.
And remembered the Internet Archive https://archive.org
Maybe they had older drivers?
Searched and used CTL-F to search for USB mentions in each old Windows98 page I used. Downloaded a few that might have it.
Found one that seemed promising.
Extracted it on my current laptop. Burned it to CD.
Copied from CD to Windows98.

So I tried the wifi dongle to connect to wireless. Probably too old to connect to modern wifi. Got an ethernet cord out. No ethernet port to connect.
Turned it off and on again, hoping Puppy Linux would detect it.
Nope.
Turned it off and on again, hoping Windows98 would detect it.
Yes!
But no driver!
Oh, fiddlesticks.
Maybe I could get a USB 3.5 floppy to USB reader? Or take it to a computer repair place?
Turned it off.

So tried to copy to USB in the USB port in the back. No USB Flash drives could be read. And I don't have a floppy drive in my current desktop or laptop.
Then I found older USB Flash drives. I found one that was only 512mb and thought that maybe it could be read.
Couldn't be found in Puppy Linux. Windows98 didn't find it.

Long thread.
Found old 3.5 floppy disk.. 20 unused, 3 of my wife's used. One of them with old family recipes on it.
Then found an old laptop, a Toshiba Satellite 320cdt I'd forgotten I'd had. Windows98 and a version of Puppy GNU/Linux on it.
Floppy drive worked.
Oh, this should be easy.
Tried to burn a copy of her floppies to a CD. Kept failing. Copied to the hard drive in both OSes.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
FUCK
Probably Fucked up my #PuppyLinux savefile.
I use the "flash" boot mode to have the "manual-save"
Now I don't have enough space left.
But resize will only happen on next reboot.
Tried to manually resize the savefile, but I can't close the cryptsetup device, because apparently /dev/loop7 is in use - but no idea from what!?
# losetup
/dev/loop7: [45828]:262155 /initrd/mnt/dev_save/puppydeb2/dpupbw64save_luks-pupnew_save.4fs
# cryptsetup status savefile
/dev/mapper/savefile is active and is in use.

This wouldn't be possible with out the inspiration you guys have given me!
I started a slacker, became a pup and now I burn with BunsenLabs!
All you see in this video is my port of BunsenLabs (a pure X distro) to labwc/sfwbar while maintaining the look and feel. #linux #bunsenlabs #debian13 #slackware-current #puppylinux #vivaldi #opensource #xorg #wayland #wlroots
I'm just now backing up #HomeAssistant and running the updates in preparation for moving its host #RPi 4B power source.
It feels like one of those sliding puzzle things where I'm doing this so I can then move an old laptop now running w/ #PuppyLinux, so I can then re-install my older RPi 1B which now boots from an old #NAS harddrive, so I can re-install #Mosquitto, so I can get my #MQTT msgs propagating again, so I can see #Mastodon toots of door open/close events.
#Test toot - Masto post from #Firefox on #PuppyLinux (#Fossapup) on old early2008 #Macbook.
Solved the challenges of a Linux for my old (2008) mac by thinking smaller. My lack of DVD-R disks was solved by abandoning the Ubuntu distro I was trying for, and exploring distros that would fit onto a CD.
I had a very old box of those around and managed, after several tries, to burn one – #PuppyLinux – that would boot and install. Yay.
