MAYPOLE

In the woods there grew a tree
And a fine fine tree was he

And on that tree there was a limb
And on that limb there was a branch
And on that branch there was a nest
And in that nest there was an egg
And in that egg there was a bird
And from that bird a feather came
And of that feather was a bed

And on that bed there was a girl
And on that girl there was a man
And from that man there was a seed
And from that seed there was a boy
And from that boy there was a man
And for that man there was a grave
From that grave there grew a tree

In the Summerisle, Summerisle, Summerisle, Summerisle, Summerisle wood

Medusa’s hair was complicated enough, but imagine her snakes each having a romantic partner. Forty-eight hissing lovers coiled together, bickering over space, romance, and dinner plans. Poor Medusa spends most mornings untangling breakups, soothing jealous hissy fits, and trying to avoid accidental stares. Being a legendary monster is hard enough... playing full-time therapist to a nest of lovesick snakes is the real curse.

This Sunday at 9pm Eastern (1am Monday UTC) once again it's #MONSTERDON the weekly monster movie watch party! Come join the rest of the fediverse as we watch a cheesy movie!

This week we've got a classic monster movie -- CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981)! The final work of Ray Harryhausen and some of his finest, the monsters in this movie are among the best ever put to film :D

The story's pretty corny, tho :D

The flick is free on Tubi: tubitv.com/movies/100040648/cl

And also on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=wVdVlYUsRp

Or you can download it from Archive.org right over here: archive.org/details/clash-of-t

See you on Sunday! :D

You know what annoys me?
Myth retellings not doing complexity anymore.

They way publishing works now, everything has to be packaged and marketed with the help of clear short-hand popular tropes.

So here you have one of the richest, most emotionally complex Greek myths ever, and it keeps getting marketed as a "grumpy-sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity romantasy!"

Seriously what the hell.

Rome has really stepped up the book game since I was last here. My favorite bookstores had SHELVES of diverse (and local) folklore and mythology, an entire new series of folklore and one on specific Italian cultural history topics, women's history selections, and other assorted goodness. They even published a new book series on the Forum, Colosseum and Domus Aurea which are pretty good.

My wallet is sad but it made me very happy 😅

It's the #DayOfHelios / Sol's Day / #Sunday! ☀️

Yesterday was the #SummerSolstice here in Europe, marking Helios' longest work day.

"For Helios' lot is toil every day and there is never any respite for him and his horses, from the moment rose-fingered Eos leaves Okeanos and goes up into the sky."

龍 (ryū) "dragon"

If you visit a shrine or temple in Japan, make sure to look up at the ceiling of the main room.

Often there will be a painting of a dragon.

One reason is that dragons represent the virtue of courage.

Another, more superstitious reason is that dragons are associated with the element of water, and so are a protection against fire. This is very important in a country where wood is the main building material.
