Once I have finally recovered from this damnable cold, I want to do an "Ask Me Anything About German Folklore" video stream.
What kinds of topics do you want me to talk about?
Also, re: mistletoe
Yesterday I learned that not everyone knows mistletoe is a tree parasite. Which is interesting to me as a storyteller. In Norse mythology, the god Baldr is killed with mistletoe (thanks Loki...). His mother, Frigg extracted an oath from everything under the sun to not harm her child. But she skipped mistletoe because she didn't consider it a separate plant.
Taxonomy saves lives, people. :D

Just like nobles had fancier clothes, they also had fancier crafting tools.

The "spinning chambers" were communal gatherings in the German winter where the women would spin flax, and everyone entertained themselves by swapping gossip, singing songs, and telling stories.

Do not spin flax during the Twelve Nights of Christmas, for this will invite the Devil to visit you.

If the Noon Woman catches you on the fields, she will question you for two hours about the cultivation of flax and the weaving of linen.
And if you fail her test, she will kill you!

The Final Battle.
Lugh Episode 25 is the longest episode of Godyssey I've made yet and the longest I plan on making that is an episode of storytelling. It took a month of editing to get right the video version. FINALLY.
The suitors demanded Penelope's hand in marriage and thus the throne of Ithaca in Odysseus' absence, but she was crafty: she said when she finished her loom she would choose a suitor, but each night she undid her weave, for years. #MythologyMonday

Rough around the edges, Baron Samedi is the loa of death, and more specifically, the gateways of death. Though he is loud and verbose, he is a kind deity who helps spirits accept death and transition, making him the best kind of psychopomp. #MythologyMonday
Metsänpeitto is the land of the forest elves in Finnish mythology. A person who enters there becomes invisible for the others. There are many spells used to escape from Mestänpeitto. Some people also escaped by turning their clothes inside out.
My latest article is all about tanuki. There are folktales, photographs, a film recommendation and some very bizarre ukiyo-e prints. I hope you enjoy it.

The Three Sisters are squash, beans, and corn, grown together by indigenous Americans whose roots invigorate the soil and help one another grow. Haudenosaunee myth has them being a byproduct of Earth Mother's dying desire to sustain her children with good food. #MythologyMonday
Beware godly salad dressing: to overcome his uncle Set, Horus made him a delicious salad covered in white dressing that was anything but. Because Set ingested Horus' "essence" Horus gained power over him, thus becoming king of the Egyptian gods. #MythologyMonday
Vegetables in #mythology go back to the earliest beginnings of #Korea when Bear and Tiger, who lived together in a cave, prayed to Hwanung the Son of Heaven wishing to be human. Hwanung gave them holy mugwort and 20 bulbs of garlic to live on while they prayed for 100 days without seeing sunlight. Tiger failed to keep the taboo, but Bear turned into a human woman called Bear Woman (熊女) after three days by seven (21 days).
Bear Woman desired to have a child but had no man to marry, so she prayed under the Altar Tree (壇樹) for a child. Hwanung briefly transformed into a man to wed her and their son became Dangun Wanggeom (壇君王儉, lit. Altar King) who founded ancient Joseon with its capital in Pyeongyang and later Asadal to rule for 1,500 years. #history #MythologyMonday
