PSA GitLab has some behaviour that breaks Maven pulling packages from it.
You can work around it by setting auth headers manually in settings.

Hopefully this saves someone some time.

I'll post the details in reply since it's long

Maven 4: Still XML. Still boring. Still Winning.

What's so ugly about Maven?
Oh, right, XML. The ancient language feared by the hipster cult of Gradle.

But let's be honest:
You don't write build files every day. You come back after months, forget everything, and now… you're debugging a Groovy poem.
Maven? You squint at the XML, and boom. Autocomplete, structure, sanity.

Maven 4? Still XML. Still boring. Still… Winning at automations.
Yes there are more features, and yes you can use other DSL's than XML with polyglot or any other extension like also before.
Something new and interesting could be the BOM packaging and requirement of java 17. You can always build lower stuff also with 17. It's simply Java.

My killer feature of Maven:
👉 Stable, sandboxed plugins, run directly from the command line. No need to create bloated build files.
No copy-pasting the same config into 12 submodules and repositories.
All automated. All under my control.
No need to depend on the next third party cloud elf named like dependabot.
Or an SDK Man for switching java versions.
All I need is simply a JAR file and a build tool which does not disrupt me.

✨ Favourite Maven Spells - aka plugins running on my CI without defining them:
mvn wrapper:wrapper - Because of consistency, no jar binary inside my repo.
mvn dependency:tree - See who brought the uninvited guests.
mvn versions:update-properties - Auto-update without the bots.
mvn license:add-third-party - keep track of used licenses
mvn org.owasp:dependency-check-maven:check - Security without sacrifice.
[...]

Stop waiting for the next shiny thing, you can always contribute to any tool.
Start building. Or better automate it.

🇮🇳 #India’s budgetary allocation for its space programme is $1.55bn - #NASA’s budget for the year is $25bn 💰. India spent $74m on the #Mars 🔴 orbiter #Mangalyaan and $75m on #Chandrayaan3. NASA’s #Maven orbiter had cost $582m 💰 and Russia’s #Luna25 $133m. #ISRO employs far fewer people and pays lower salaries, which makes Indian projects competitive 💪 bbc.com/news/articles/cn9xlgnn

@josh I do like the idea of declarative tools like Makefile and #Maven where the recipe for *how* to build something is separate from the details of a particular project. I want to write **no** build code, not “nice” build code. I do accept people’s preferences may vary.

"Yesterday, the fediverse celebrated a victory against a head technology executive working on an “#AIpowered #socialnetwork” who decided to “ingested about 1,120,000 posts from Mastodon”.

…a company with an alternative take on social media without likes & followers that just raised $2 millions wanted to join the #fediverse by, in technical terms, adding official #ActivityPub support, much like Meta is doing with Threads."

Ok, so the #Maven team states that they deleted the posts they INGESTED WITHOUT CONSENT after the huge negative response from the #fediverse #community.

But yet, the question remains, don't 'The Rules' of each server include the fact that #UserContent is not to be stolen (taken without consent) ?

I mean one of the #MainReason to switch from #bigTech, is the idea that my #content is #notForSale, especially without my explicit say so.

We Distribute · Maven Imported 1.12 Million Fediverse Posts (Updated)A social network founded by a former OpenAI employee was caught importing public posts from Mastodon...and ran AI analysis to add tags to them.

The recent hubbub around social media company Maven scraping the fediverse to train its AI has resurfaced an issue I find concerning. (If you’re not aware, check out #Maven)

As I understand it, the core organizing principle of the web, the fediverse, and the open source tools and specs that define both those is the idea that anyone can freely access, publish, and use what they find there however they want. Note that this reads “however *they* what”, not “only in the ways *you* want” (1/3)

Maven Imported 1.12 Million Fediverse Posts

In addition to pulling in posts, the import process seems to be running AI sentiment analysis to add tags and relational data after content reaches Maven’s servers. This is a core part of Maven’s product: instead of follows or likes, a model trains itself on its own data in an attempt to surface unique content algorithmically.

Even more shocking is the revelation that somehow, even private DMs from Mastodon were mirrored on their public site and searchable. How this is even possible is beyond me, as DM’s are ostensibly only between two parties, and the message itself was sent from two hackers.town
WHAT THE FUCK? There should have been no way that #Maven was able to read DMs, even if they're poorly coded (should be importing Public posts only) and the DMs are not E2EE.

I guess the common wisdom of not trusting the privacy of
#Mastodon DMs is very correct all along. :koishtare:

Oh, and I was skeptical of whether this is block worthy (don't want another
#ContentNation or #Awakari incident again), but this definitely is #fediblock worthy considering their casual response. Reading someone else's DMs is never acceptable. This flaw should've been acknowledged and reported to Mastodon (and perhaps other #fediverse developers too just in case).

Same with this "Maven" thing today.

They want to make some kinda AI-edited personal-magazine. A narrow-focus news show, personalized for you by terra-flops of statistical correlations.

People do seem to like algorithmic feeds. Nobody can read everything, so some kinda summary or selector is inevitable.

But to do it, you gotta read everything.

That mega-mind is gonna be babbling to bosses and dates about every public word on the web whatever your privacy settings say.

These folks have "deleted" the data for now at least.

But that T&C's switcheroo is even easier if we never signed any T&Cs and they have implied consent because google made the precedent back in the 90s when they indexed the whole web.
