Received reader’s report whose language/structure show chatbot participation, but not what extent/stage: reviewer could have fed in my draft; or could have read it themselves before feeding their notes into LLM to phrase report; or something somewhere between those poles. Like most reader's reports by humans, this one combines some helpful suggestions with some unhelpful tangents. A. Should I care? B. Should I use the same method to respond to reader’s report? #LLM #academicchatter #Reviewer1

Friends, I have just come across the phrase 'odious tittle-tattle' to describe the intellectual atmosphere of mid 20th century Oxford, and I am transformed and converted.

'Ugh, another department meeting. What a wasted afternoon of odious tittle-tattle.'

Writing ethical statement for academic papers in 2025 be like:

This study was approved by the institutional review board for the University of North Carolina. All participants completed a modified online consent with the option to exit the study at any time. Data were fully de-identified and anonymous. No type of generative artificial intelligence was used for the writing of this manuscript, nor for the creation of images, graphics, tables, or their corresponding captions.

Essential reading on the massive scale commercial con of #Turnitin (and the new #AI detection con). Ive railed about the Turnitin con for years. Somehow, as the saying goes: 'I told you so' doesn't really cover it. Im proud to say I have NEVER used Turnitin in any of my lectures, either the earlier period 2007-2015 or 2017/20 and then in Malta in 2022/23. The last 2 periods Turnitin was meant to be mandatory.

Hi, academics,
I have a question that is somewhat important for understanding the treatment of some untenured folks at a university.

This question is specifically aimed for academics who are working in a country where they are not citizens: How much, if any, assistance did/does your university provide with your necessary visa requirements? (I was going to do a poll but its probably too fine-grained of answers.)

Please share if relevant!

More Aussie academia cuts, this time at the ANU.

I remember when I finished my PhD, talking about 'just need a job to ride out the next couple of years and things will get better' and instead things seem to have gotten much much worse. Awesome.

ABC News · Australian National University announces more job cuts as it seeks to save $250 millionBy Adam Shirley

I am beyond saddened by my university cutting almost 20% of majors. Admittedly some of these were degrees that no one was enrolled in and were left behind in some administrative way, it also is a lot of highly regarded fields, from environmental science, gender studies, art history.

What Indiana is doing is not an isolated event.

Any chance that someone on here knows someone who uses course hero?

There's a syllabus I want access to. I've asked the professor for a copy but I need it urgently and I bet he won't check his email till the fall.

ALL digital IP licensing of any kind is dead in the water until we have better methods to monitor and regulate AI crawl bots. Cloudflare offer hope in the future, instead of the ridiculous 'fair use' approach currently advocated.

CC licences have zero meaning atm, bots (and their owners) dont care what icons you have on your website. PERHAPS machine readable opt out (eg metadata or htaccess) might make some difference.
