Bristle Cone Pine Abstract
This is a close-up image of a Bristle Cone Pine Tree captured near the tree line on Wheeler Peak at Great Basin National Park in Nevada.
I chose to shoot this close-up so as to highlight the amazing swirls, bends, twist, and other growth patterns that these trees produce over their thousands year lifetimes.

Lithospheric drips (a relatively cold and dense mass of lithosphere that sinks vertically into the upper mantle) have been identified using geophysical methods in the Great Basin and now in northern Borneo. The Borneo study published in Nature was accompanied by this startling artist’s depiction of a lithospheric drip.

The latest from #NOAA #NWS #Climate Prediction Center shows a mixed outlook for the coming months.
Expect #drought relief in large parts of California, the #GreatBasin, and the Northern Plains. Conditions may also improve in Florida. But ongoing and expanding drought is possible across the Northwest, Puerto Rico, and parts of the Southern Plains west into New Mexico and Colorado.
Western #snowpack is still looking strong across most states, and #California and the #GreatBasin continue to see record-setting #snowfall. A lot can happen before the next dry season, but, statewide, California's snowpack is at 180% of the end-of-season (April 1) average.
Meanwhile, the #Willamette and coast watersheds in #Oregon have also seen big improvement this month. The Upper Arkansas in #Colorado and the Rio Grande-Mimbres watersheds in #NewMexico continue to struggle.
Check out the current #snowpack (left) compared to this time last year (right) from #USDA #NRCS. Across most of the #West, conditions are looking much better, especially in #California and the #GreatBasin. Many watersheds are close to, or above, the long-term average.
