This is the bridge at the bottom of the long and very steep climb at Devils Bridge, just outside Aberytwyth.

Despite it being a sunny Sunday morning, the light at the bottom of this cliff was not good. The colours are very flat in this picture, so I'm sticking with black and white.

Black and white photo of a series of locks, known as a stair, for lifting narrow boats up the hill. We look down the hill so see mainly the huge beams used to open the lock gates, and the black and white columns housing the mechanism for opening the sluices. All manual! The canal is wider than most; this is the Grand Union Canal, doubled in width in the early 20th century in a vain attempt to compete with the railways.
