Today in Labor History December 9, 1935: Walter Liggett, American newspaper editor and muckraker, was murdered in a drive-by shooting with a Thompson submachine gun, as he stepped out of his car, groceries in his hand. His wife and daughter were in the car and witnessed his death. Liggett was a card-carrying member of the American Socialist Party, but he was more of a Mid-Western Populist-Socialist than a Marxist. In the 1920's he participated in efforts to free Sacco and Vanzetti and Thomas Mooney. In a series of articles, he accused Farmer-Labor politicians of collusion with the organized crime family of Isadore Blumenfield. He accused Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson of corruption and said that he should be impeached and prosecuted. In response, Blumenfield tried to bribe him to stop his exposés, but Liggett refused. Blumenfield and his gang savagely beat Liggett up. Liggett escalated his attacks and began printing a list of reasons for Olson's impeachment on the front page of the Midwest-American. Soon after, he was murdered.

A city in southern Mexico swore in a new mayor after the previous mayor was killed and beheaded less than a week after taking office. Gustavo Alarcón, a doctor, has taken office after being elected as an alternate on the same ticket as deceased Mayor Alejandro Acros. Chilpancingo, the capitol of the violence-ravaged state of Guerrero in Mexico, is reeling after the city’s new mayor was murdered on Sunday, less than a week after he took office. Gruesome photos confirming Alexander Arcos’s death circulated on messaging apps. Just three days before Arcos’ killing, the city’s new government secretary was shot dead. A total of 68 suspected #gang members with ties to #WhiteSupremacy were charged in the #LosAngeles area Wednesday in a large-scale takedown, federal prosecutors said.

The #PeckerwoodsGang members and associates were charged in a sweeping #FederalIndictment, which included allegations of #racketeering, #FirearmsTrafficking, #DrugTrafficking and #FinancialFraud, according to officials.

Donald Trump on Friday promised, if elected, to carry out #mass #deportations of undocumented immigrants, starting in Springfield, Ohio, and Aurora, Colorado.
Why it matters:
Trump's announcement comes as he continues to push #baseless #conspiracy #theories about immigrants,
including during Tuesday night's presidential debate with Vice President Harris.

What he's saying:
❌"We're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country," Trump said at a news conference at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
"And we're going to start with Springfield and Aurora."
Trump also said he may hold campaign events in one or both cities.

During Tuesday's debate, Trump echoed unfounded narratives that #Haitian #immigrants were #eating family #pets in Springfield.

He also referenced exaggerated claims about #Venezuelan #gang activity in Aurora,
claiming migrants are "taking over the town, taking over buildings ... they're destroying our country."

Law enforcement officials and local leaders in both cities have countered the claims.
