SHELL GO TO HELL

Sharing this rant to #EndFossilFuels again since *after* I made this, *another* fire (#underwoodFire) started even closer to #PortAlberni. Like so many other towns this year, it has threatened all of our homes and lives.

There is blame to lay: it is at the feet of the fossil fuel industry.

To every person in Canada, including oil industry workers:

We must transition people out of this destructive work at a wartime pace. We can do it, we just have to want to help each other end fossil fuels as soon as possible.

I don't support any BS industrialized innovations that are only used to make more fast profits for sleazy, greasy ecociders who don't give a fuck about our ecosystems, wildlife, humans or future generations. When you don't work in sustainable ways, when your work involves constantly killing Mother Nature for paycheques - you're going to pay the consequence prices at some point. I hope it is the worst hell on Earth for the ecociders.

You're fucking complicit in killing the very ecosystems that sustain all life on this planet.

#WildFirst or you will all feel more wrath from disrespecting, abusing & exploiting Mother Nature. Nature doesn't give a fuck what your political allegiances are. Your grandkids will loathe your complicity, ecociders & sellout enablers.

Just sent this email to all my local elected reps, municipal, First Nations, provincial MLA and federal MP.

Dear Local Leadership,

A short message as I know you are all very busy with the fire on top of normal duties.

The world, including our ancient forests and bustling towns need all of you to become climate campaigners or the inevitable day will come when it all burns.

The “explosive” and “unprecedented” nature of this fire was preventable had world leaders followed their own commitments in the 1990s and reduced fossil fuel use to zero as quickly as possible. Fossil fuel production continues to rise in Canada. It must stop. You must advocate for and implement policy to achieve this. It is your duty as representatives concerned for both the present and future inhabitants of this land.

I deeply hope this fire shows there can be no equivocation. We must end the use of fossil fuels and every level of government must pursue that goal with every possible measure.

I found this ten year old sign in my backyard as I was cleaning up to prepare our home for possible evacuation.

Thank you for your service, and stay safe.

Cheers
Chris

Let's talk about what is “unprecedented”.

Coastal Fire Centre:
"I don't think I've seen a fire like this on Vancouver Island," Caranci said.”

Comment:
In 2015 after the major (18 month) drought and 2014/15 Pacific “blob” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blob) and subsequent massive 2015 BC fire season, there was a fire in Squamish (on the mainland) which is in the Coastal Fire Centre.

I was City councillor in Port Alberni at the time and at that year's UBCM conference for all municipal officials in the fall, after the fire season, we received a presentation from BC Wildfire on a Squamish "Elaho” fire. (2015 not 2024). It was over 15,000 hectares before it was finally contained.

The same words were used “Explosive Growth”.

According to the BC Wildfire service at that time, it was the first time they had seen Rank 4 and Rank 5 fire behaviour anywhere in the Coastal Fire Centre. It was unprecedented.

This was the 'new normal' of human-caused climate change.

Only the drought conditions and extreme heat could have caused the temperate rain forests of Coastal BC to exhibit this behaviour.

Now this ‘unprecedented' behaviour is in the temperate coastal rain forests of Vancouver Island. This is, and was, predictable.

This is climate change. The “new normal” is Change.

It is getting worse because *our* CO2/GHG emissions continue to rise.

The only way to stop this changing normal is to end the use of fossil fuels and stop the emissions of greenhouse gases immediately.
