A list of Fedi sites that appear to be outside the United States.

This list will only center around country level domain names, since word-based domains, for example, Dot Social, are often managed by a corporation within the United States.

@sophie

Just remember, Dot com, net, org, info, us, and edu are domain extensions governed by the United States. Dot Social, for example, like many word-based domain extensions, are managed by corporations in the United States.

You can host your dot com, for example, in Germany, and while your site files would be safe, technically they could pull your domain name.

Admittedly, that's rare, but we are dealing with a Government Regime that is threatening their own allies. What is normal anymore!?

The safe bet when starting a new website would be to pick a country level domain.

Fedi recommended #porkbun for domains and... can I just gush about them for a minute?

I tried my hand at domain forwarding with #Carrd but their documentation was out of date. K, cool.

Jumped on with porkbun support, was chatting with a helpful human within two minutes :blobfoxbongo:

Not only was Trevor the Support Guy friendly and helpful but he also walked me through each step with screen grabs so I learned as we went. AND for extra credit, he's going to email Carrd and tell them to update their docs.

So anyway, if you're looking to go #domain shopping, HIGHLY recommend!

We techies really are nerds living in our own little bubble. Every time I talk to friends outside of IT, they just laugh at the things we take for granted. In our world, it’s completely normal to assume that everyone has their own domain, self-hosts everything, avoids anything proprietary like it’s the plague, and probably has a dozen side projects running on some self-built server in their closet.

But then there’s my friend, a mechanic, who finds this absolutely hilarious. To him, it’s like expecting every car mechanic to not only have their own repair garage at home but also to manufacture their own tools and, while they’re at it, maybe even start their own car brand. It sounds ridiculous when you put it that way - but to us, that’s just how things should be!

I'm starting a set of blog posts focused on #selfhosting adventure. It's focused on #onsite hosting and will recommend #EU based providers/services.
I'm based in #Spain, so some providers are from here.
The first post is just an overview and focuses on #internet connection and #port #forwarding.
Later I'll focus on #domain setup, #hardware and finally on @yunohost apps and services :)
Happy to get feedback!

Here is an updated copy of my list (January 25, 2025) of service providers outside the United States jurisdiction. 😉

Naturally, making this list is not easy. These are two types of companies I avoided in making my list.

1) Those who actually fall under US-jurisdiction because they are based or owned by a company in the USA.

More than often, I will stumble over a company that appears to be outside the USA, but later find they are owned by another corporation based inside the USA, and so they do fall under US-jurisdiction.

2) Those who voluntarily give up their sovereignty to the United States. The 2nd type, who voluntarily gives up their sovereignty in the way of US jurisdiction, have whole sections of their terms concerning US Laws and US based customers. If a fascist government says jump, these people will ask, how high?!

I encourage people to scrutinize my list. The old saying, "trust, but verify", is something I believe in.
