A California federal judge has ruled that three #US #authors suing #Anthropic for #copyrightinfringement can represent writers nationwide in a #classaction lawsuit, whose #books the #AI startup allegedly pirated to train its #Claude #chatbot.
Judge Alsup said Anthropic may have illegally downloaded as many as 7 million books from the pirate websites, which could make it liable for billions of dollars in damages if the authors' case is successful.

Many class action lawsuits related to data breaches get dismissed for lack of standing when plaintiffs cannot show concrete injury or imminent harm. Or when they do allege concrete harm like fraud or IDtheft, they may have trouble showing it was due to that specific #databreach and not any of a gadzillion other breaches that have occurred.
In Webb v. Injured Workers Pharmacy, the lower court dismissed the suit because it didn't think the plaintiffs made a clear enough showing of tracing the harm to the breach.
The appellate court reversed and remanded.
After that, the case settled for more than $1M.

The complaint says the new law is vague, contradicts federal law & makes it impossible for #healthcare providers to determine exactly what kind of immigration status is excluded and how to verify that status for patients. They want a #judge to grant them #ClassAction status, expanding any ruling to other impacted people.
CASA (plaintiff in Maryland #BirthrightCitizenship case) has now filed an amended complaint seeking class certification for similarly situated individuals impacted by #Trump’s #ExecutiveOrder.
