#catastrophic

0 posts0 participants0 posts today

Clutter in space presents an imminent threat to human activity at or above the #Kármán #line,
the altitude at which conventional aircraft can no longer fly
—about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the surface.

As more objects are launched into orbit, the possibility of #catastrophic #collisions increases.

More frequent collisions increase the volume of debris, thereby raising the odds of another collision.

Like a traffic jam, eventually the area becomes so congested that nothing can move safely.

The minimum speeds necessary to achieve orbit are very high,
thus everything up there moves extremely fast.

Basic physics teaches that the faster an object moves, the higher energy it carries into an impact scenario.

For this reason, even tiny morsels pack a devastating punch.

For example:
An object 10 cm wide (3.9 inches) packs the same force as 7 kg (15.4 lbs.) of TNT.
With limited ability to conduct repairs and collect debris,
the problem worsens with each occurrence.

Decades ago, a NASA physicist calculated how this situation can eventually devolve into disaster.

He determined that putting low earth orbit (where most human-made objects reside) into such a state of chaos will lead to space travel
—manned or unmanned
—eventually becoming impossible.

This principle is now called the #Kessler #Syndrome.

'Reckless Conduct' of #BigOil Caused #HurricaneMilton—And Now They Should Pay

"The failure by our political class to deal with this completely solvable issue is staggering and shameful," wrote one journalist.

Julia Conley
Oct 09, 2024

[...] "As Nathan J. Robinson wrote in Current Affairs, climate scientists and meteorologists have unequivocally told oil companies and policymakers that #FossilFuel extraction is causing planetary heating, which has led to higher temperatures in oceans and bodies of water including the Gulf of Mexico, where the rapidly strengthening hurricane formed.

"But despite the knowledge that fossil fuel giants like #ExxonMobil and #Shell had decades ago that drilling for oil and gas would cause '#ViolentWeather' and 'potentially #catastrophic events,' the industry's profits have only grown as the U.S. has continued to subsidize their #pollution-causing activities.

"'The failure by our political class to deal with this completely solvable issue is staggering and shameful,' wrote Robinson. 'Many of them have children and grandchildren. Presumably they would like their descendants to inherit a world worth living in. And they could make that happen. Unfortunately, it would require challenging the power and profits of some of America's most influential corporations.'

"In the Substack newsletter Heated, Arielle Samuelson explained on Wednesday how fossil fuel extraction and planetary heating 'mutated' Hurricane Milton, which stunned weather experts this week as its wind speeds grew at a record-breaking pace, from 60 miles per hour to 180 miles per hour in just 36 hours.

"It was the second time in recent weeks that a hurricane in the region has intensified quickly; areas that are expected to take a direct hit from Milton are still overwhelmed by the destruction left by Hurricane Helene.

"Hot temperatures in the planets' oceans and gulfs fuels hurricanes, and as Samuelson noted, scientists say the 'extremely hot' Gulf of Mexico 'was made far more likely by heat-trapping pollutants from the fossil fuel, #agriculture, #chemical, and #cement industries.'"

Far-right influencers turn against Trump campaign aides and tactics -- though not at the Republican candidate himself.

Some of the internet’s most influential far-right figures are turning against Donald Trump’s campaign, threatening a ♦️#digital#war♦️against the Republican candidate’s aides and allies that could complicate the party’s calls for unity in the final weeks of the presidential race.
#Nick #Fuentes, a 🌟white supremacist 🌟and podcaster who dined with Trump at his Palm Beach resort Mar-a-Lago in 2022, said on X that Trump’s campaign was “#blowing #it” by not positioning itself more to the right
and was “headed for a #catastrophic #loss,” in a post that by Wednesday had been viewed 2.6 million times.
#Laura #Loomer, a 🌟far-right activist🌟 whom Trump last year called “very special,” said his “#weak#surrogates had unraveled his momentum and that his approach “needs to change FAST because ❗️we can’t talk about a stolen election for another 4 years❗️,” in an X post that was “liked” more than 8,000 times.

And #Candace #Owens, a 🌟far-right influencer 🌟with 5 million X followers who was photographed with Trump in March, described the conservative infighting in a podcast Tuesday as a “#MAGA #Civil #War” fueled by anger that Trump’s policies and persona had been softened to boost his mainstream appeal.

Enough water for #nuclear reactors in #NSW but scientists worry about #wildlife

July 19, 2024

"The federal opposition has proposed seven #NuclearPowerPlants across the country if it wins the next election.

"Its plan involves building the plants on retiring or retired #coal sites, including two in #NewSouthWales, at #Liddell in the #HunterValley and #MountPiper near #Lithgow.

[...]

#Environmental concerns

"The environmental impact of both [closed-loop and once through] systems has raised concerns in #conservation groups.

"While the closed-loop system does not return water warmer to the supply than when it was taken out, the once-through cooling process does.

"Professor Johnson said changes to the temperature of #LakeLyell and #LakeLiddell could be harmful aquatic native #wildlife.

"'#Ecosystems are evolved and used to a certain temperature range, so when temperatures are higher than that, it can change all the things that live in the river,' she said.

"Jacqui Mills from the NSW Nature Conservation Council believed the once-through cooling method could have #catastrophic consequences.

"'If you have hot water discharges, it will very likely kill microorganisms,' Ms Mills said.

"'That has a flow-on impact for the creatures that rely on them like #platypus. It basically disrupts the #environment.'

"Julie Favell from the Lithgow Environment Group said recent examples of coal and other #mining industries breaching #environmental #regulations gave her 'no confidence' that a #NuclearPlant would be safe.

"'Over the past 20 years we have seen so many impacts on #swamps, #waterways, the damage in most cases is irreversible,' she said.

"'You cannot erase human error and natural disasters. There would be nothing left if one of those incidents happened.'"

Experts working with the #FirstNation of #NaChoNyäkDun who have witnessed the fallout at #VictoriaGoldEagle mine near #Mayo, #Yukon, say systems on-site are so severely compromised that damage to the land & water is all but inevitable.

What they describe is a system rendered mostly #inoperable, with each affected piece elevating #risks to the #environment — every day.

On June 24, part of the Eagle #mine failed and a massive #RockSlide involving roughly 4 million tonnes of material cleaved off a large piece of the facility where #gold is extracted from ore using a chemical process called cyanide heap leach. Estimates put the amount of ore stacked on the heap leach pad — which functions as a giant industrial percolator — at nearly 4 times what was lost in the slide.

With the #HeapLeach pad downed, experts say a #toxic soup of #SodiumCyanide & other #contaminants — up to 300,000 cubic metres of solution, according to the #YukonGovernment — was released in the initial slide. Since then, they say, more of it has been draining.

The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun has called the event "the region's most recent and potentially #catastrophic #mining failure."

TMC said on Tuesday that its subsidiary, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI), intended to submit an application to the International Seabed Authority (ISA) after global regulator meets in July next year.
