The #Trump admin proposed a rule change that would prohibit only actions that directly hurt or kill actual animals, not the #habitats they rely on. If finalized, the change could make it easier to #log, #mine & build on #lands that #EndangeredSpecies need to thrive.

"#Habitat loss is the biggest single cause of #extinction & endangered species—it makes sense to address it,"Ctr for Biological Diversity govt affairs dir Brett Hartl said. He called efforts to deny that cause "callous & reckless."

🇬🇧 Since 1395/1400, tin, silver and copper have been mined at Geyersberg. In 1704 and 1803, the mine collapsed twice and was subsequently closed.
The binge is up to 60 metres deep in places and was photographed here from a hill to the south.

Today In Labor History April 8, 1864: The 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, banning chattel slavery. However, it permitted a continuation of wage slavery and the forced labor of convicts without pay. And on this date in 1911, 128 convict miners, mostly African-Americans jailed for minor offenses, were killed by a massive explosion at the Banner coalmine near Birmingham, Alabama. While the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, which occurred just two weeks earlier, elicited massive public attention and support for the plight of immigrant women working in sweatshop conditions, the Banner explosion garnered almost no public sympathy, probably due to racism and the fact that they were prisoners.

A river ‘died’ overnight in #Zambia after an acidic waste spill at a #Chinese-owned #mine

By RICHARD KILLE and JACOB ZIMBA
March 15, 2025

KITWE, Zambia (AP) — "Authorities and environmentalists in Zambia fear the long-term impact of an acid spill at a Chinese-owned mine that contaminated a major river and could potentially affect millions of people after signs of #pollution were detected at least 100 kilometers (60 miles) downstream.

"The spill happened on Feb. 18 when a tailings dam that holds acidic waste from a #CopperMine in the north of the country collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

"The collapse allowed some 50 million liters of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to flow into a stream that links to the #KafueRiver, Zambia’s most important waterway, the engineering institution said.

"'It is an #environmental disaster really of catastrophic consequences,' said Chilekwa Mumba, an environmental activist who works in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province."
