Was feeling this morning like we've been neglecting the community allotment this year. We've been short staffed and some of our regular volunteers have been unwell. I had a lovely afternoon down there potting up many things that had self seeded accompanied by lots of buzzing bees loving the lungwort and honey berry flowers. Now have many pots of strawberries, chives, foxgloves to pass on and lots of things are growing happily so all ok. 🐝🌱😃 #gardening #permaculture #Allotment #AllotmentLife

Got given a batch of very old fruit and veg seeds and done some germination testing (most have 50 - 70% germination rates which is pretty good). Thought I'd just plant these globe artichoke seeds and give them a try. Seeds are allegedly best sown before 2017. I soaked them for a few days in water and then put in a covered seed tray in my car to act as a mini greenhouse. 2 weeks later half have come up. It really does annoy me the hype from seed sellers that you must use new seeds - it is true for some veg but for most things it really isn't! For anyone concerned about where I'm going to plant a dozen globe artichokes which will grow into enormous plants.. will give most away through our #CommunityFridge and keep one. #permaculture #GrowYourOwn #Allotment #AllotmentLife

Hooray! After 4 years on the waiting list we have an #allotment and it is really lovely. We are fortunate that the previous tenants have left a quirky shed, a large fruit cage and a well structured plot. It's going to need lots of organic matter as it doesn't look particularly well cultivated and there's a fair amount of wasted space. Looking forward to putting our stamp on it. It is 5 minutes from home and near a national cycle route. #foodgrowing #slowliving #selfsufficiency #allotmentlife

The process of identifying apples I find strangely intriguing, so that some days I spend considerable time on it, but also extremely frustrating... ie I certainly knew that apples, ripening in storage, change colour, but that a red apple would basically become a golden one? That I had not forseen. However, it made me realise what they mean when they say the hue of overcolour can be brown... fruitid.com remains an amazing tool #fruit #allotmentlife #apples #earlyautumn #horticulture

Just look at that magnificent brush! I can just imagine how cosy my little mate will be curled up in her den with her nose tucked in.
As the growing season comes to a close I will be posting random photos of scenes from the allotment site, insects plants and stuff. #AllotmentLife
I'd love to see pics from your allotment or garden to see me through winter.

Excellent news from the plot (@BroadforkForVictory). Management seems ok after I shared a brochure on what I am trying to do that I had prepared for the open day. They had some concerns on my reuse of compost bags, but asked me to explain, so I did: they are perfect to accelerate rotting of noxious weeds (except bindweed, which I drown in the butt for liquid feed). Every winter I empty the compost out and get rid of those bags that have started to degrade. #allotmentlife
