rooftopjaxx<p>There's also a first chilli on one of those that did make it down and was left to languish outdoors behind a bit of a windbreak.<br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>Garden update: The second planting of corn is coming along well in the greenhouse, 10 days after sowing the seeds. They will get planted out in to the ground in about 4 more days. The squash, cukes, and butternut are in the ground and enjoying the warm (but smokey) weather. Now back to chopping weeds... 😀 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/SweetCorn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SweetCorn</span></a></p>
rooftopjaxx<p>Not sure these will ever make it to the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> as the greenhouse is still unfinished, but there's the first chillies already in the flat windows</p>

Graham Ward<p>Allotmenteer friends, at this time of the year when my plot is looking pretty full, I think I should have planned better what I planted. What do you prioritise on: high value crops, varieties you cannot gain the shops or just easy to grow? <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a></p>
Yvan<p>Running late with the old <a href="https://toot.ale.gd/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> postcards yet again, just trying to actually get things done which doesn't leave a lot of time for faffin about on the computer at the moment... this video covers the last weekend of May, in which we clear the polytunnel, plant out tomatoes &amp; friends, and play at reducing the chlorine in the mains water.</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/gq_w0WzN60M" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/gq_w0WzN60M</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Yvan<p>WfH day means we had a bit of evening time down the <a href="https://toot.ale.gd/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a>... </p><p>So the "three sisters bed" we sorted out on the weekend now has added Baby Corn (na na na na na), pumpkings (Queensland Blue, Burgess Buttercup, Waltham Butternut, and Uchiki Kuri), and Zucchinies (All Green Bush, Easypick Gold, and Black Beauty).</p><p>Next up, when they've germinated, we'll bung in some beans.</p><p>We also harvested our first ever Kohl Rabi and pulled a couple of sample garlics from the polytunnel edges, I think those whole rows can come out now.</p><p>Next job: work out what the hell one does with a Kohl Rabi.</p>

Mactonex<p>First nasturtium flower of the year. These things are so easy to grow even an idiot like me can manage it. And when they are so beautiful, why wouldn’t you? Bonus - the flowers and leaves are both edible. <a href="https://toot.community/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/bloomscrolling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bloomscrolling</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/nasturtium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nasturtium</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/EdibleFlowers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EdibleFlowers</span></a></p>
Mike<p>Today's top tip for avoiding very bad language on the allotment - do not use a staple gun to staple your thumb.</p><p>It went into my thumb (a couple of milimetres and slightly perforated the nail).</p><p>There is a photo, but it's very unimpressive because the bleeding had stopped by the time I could gather enough wits to take a picture.</p><p>It still f*c*ing hurts.</p><p>I think the general term used for this type of injury is stupidity.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/stupidity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stupidity</span></a></p>
Mercy B. Coup/Lacrimae<p>I didn’t go to the <a href="https://helvede.net/tags/AllotmentGarden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AllotmentGarden</span></a> for 10 days because the weather was shit and I was busy. Came back to two of my veggie beds being absolutely overgrown with goosefoot (they’re new beds from this year so it’s probably because the seeds enjoyed being disturbed) and the horseradish poking up in new and exciting (not) spots.</p><p>Two hours of work today helped a bit though, but I’m happy I will have more time to get it under control again over the next few weeks 😅</p><p><a href="https://helvede.net/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://helvede.net/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a></p>
Mercy B. Coup/Lacrimae<p>After a weekend with a lot of peopling and <a href="https://helvede.net/tags/RollerDerby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RollerDerby</span></a> as tournament head referee for Harbour Cup and a somewhat stressful trip home yesterday, my plan today is to weed a bit in the <a href="https://helvede.net/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a> (which really needs it after almost 2 weeks of lots of rain and some sun).</p><p>But first: lunch under the lilac tree! I’m starving as I didn’t end up getting much proper food yesterday</p><p><a href="https://helvede.net/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <a href="https://helvede.net/tags/AllotmentLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AllotmentLife</span></a></p>

Richard Rollinson<p>Much better weather today. No wind and temperatures are approaching 70°F (21°C). Got the first planting of sweetcorn hilled up and moved some mulch from the tumbler to the tomatoes. Looks like the pole beans (Kentucky Blue) are doing a little better now that the sun is shining. A quick look at the Apple Maggot Fly traps in the apple trees show that they are doing their job. Happy Days! 😀 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Yvan<p>Not a bad day all in all, as ever not quite as much done as hoped... but stuff got done. First beans in toilet-roll-tube "root trainers" at home, some planting in the small home courtyard, and Kat got Swan River Daisies pricked out.</p><p>Down at the <a href="https://toot.ale.gd/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> I finished securing the greenhouse roof, finished the polytunnel-side greenhouse wall (two walls and a door left!), and got the pallets cleared out of the way on the inside. Burnt some crappy pallet. Strimmed. Cut the crappy old IBC in half (still not sure what to do with this). Cleared the back of the new plot a bit, stacked the IBCs. Kat, meanwhile, did a lot of weeding and cleared woodchip off the back "three sisters bed", we got a layer of municipal compost over it, and have planted sweetcorn and tomatillos into the bed already. 🎉 (Poor corn isn't the happiest.)</p><p>Now home, charcoal getting good to go in the BBQ... Barnsley Chops in the fridge. 🤤</p>
Keith<p>Also found some <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/strawberries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strawberries</span></a> on the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> that the mice had not.</p>
Keith<p>Apparently, the spinach I've grown is not 'true' spinach. I'm assuming I bought some dodgy knock-off seeds. Why isn't there more fuss about this? Feels like the next PPI mis-selling scandal to me. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/spinach" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spinach</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>The weather is still a little too cool and windy for my liking, but BeetBear and I could wait no longer. All the squashes and cucumbers got set in the ground today. I covered them with the white plastic totes to protect them from wind, cold, and pests. They'll stay covered until conditions improve and/or they outgrow the totes.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Mike<p>Are any allotment or gardening people here (probably UK specific) using Strulch - the proprietary straw mulch.<br>It gets excellent reviews and its worked wonders with our strawberries, but I'm wondering if it has damaged our courgettes</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a></p>
