Had a lovely hike up the Wildspitz and down to Sattel today. I spent two hours at the Berggasthaus up top enjoying the views (and coffee and soup and plum pie with whipped cream and hot tea). I made this trip almost 90 minutes faster than 8 weeks ago, partly because there was very little snow on the ascent, and partly because I was able to take a shorter, steeper descent now that the snows have melted (but I like to pretend it’s also because I’m in slightly better shape).

The sculpture at Metrostation Weesperplein honors the old “Weesperpoortstation” (1843–1939), the former railway station from which to depart to Utrecht and Arnhem. Carved in sandstone, this artwork was erected in 1941.

Created by architect Piet Kramer in the ‘Amsterdamse School’ style, it displays three layered historical locomotives representing the railways’ evolution. 🚂🚃🚄

The first steam train between Amsterdam and Haarlem (sept. 20, 1839) drove at the speed of 30 km/h and was pulled by a locomotive called “De Arend”. In 1908, the country’s first electric train took off between Rotterdam Hofplein and Scheveningen Kurhaus. It was powered by a 10,000-volt AC system from a dedicated power plant. 🔋⚡️

The first diesel train followed in 1934, running from Amsterdam to Arnhem. 🚂💪

Wochenendheimreisewelle Richtung Osten von Freiburg mit dem #Zug noch wie vor 25 Jahren - nur ein paar Stunden früher

(Eventuell auch falscher Eindruck, weil die Züge jetzt weniger Kapazität haben)

Das Bild zeigt eine Außenaufnahme des Bahnhofs Donaueschingen an einem sonnigen Tag. Im Vordergrund sind Bahngleise und ein Bahnsteig mit Kieselsteinen zu sehen. Auf dem Bahnsteig befinden sich mehrere Personen, die entweder warten oder entlanggehen. Der Bahnhof selbst ist ein weißes Gebäude mit einem überdachten Wartebereich. In Ländern mit viel kombiniertem Rad- und Zugverkehr werden nicht die Stellplätze für Fahrräder in den Zügen ausgebaut - das würde nicht skalieren. Sondern es werden riesige Radabstellanlagen direkt an den Bahnhöfen gebaut, inklusive Stellplätzen für Bikesharing-Systeme, so dass auch Gäste mit dem Rad weiter können.

Hier z.B. der Fläche vor dem Bahnhof Antwerpen-Berchem. Auf der Rückseite des Bahnhofs gibt es noch ein Fahrradparkhaus.

I left before sunrise this morning (short winter days) to hike up the Wildspitz. I spent two and a half hours relaxing in the Berggasthaus restaurant up top (the black lentil cream soup was delicious) enjoying the views before heading down the other side towards Sattel. Stats: 20.89 km, 904 m ascent, 5h55m on the trail, 4°C ⛅️. #Wildspitz #Zug #Schweiz
