@realtegan I remember that. It didn't bother me _as_ much but I do remember waiting for that fucking thing to go Chomp Chomp and crush everything under it someday.
I paid a LOT of attention to the teardown and went down a couple of times to watch and collect some Viaduct Rocks to keep, too. (Apparently enough of us did that that they ended up collecting a bunch so people could pick up some at Sound Transit HQ. :D )

This method of getting trains up the steep incline out of Queen Street Station continued until 1908 when cable-hauling was finally replaced by banking engines. The Avon Viaduct still forms part of the mainline route between Glasgow and Edinburgh to this day, more than 160 years after it was first built.
The Avon Viaduct near Linlithgow. With over 20 arches and 404 metres in length, this viaduct was built in 1841 as part of Scotland's first intercity railway line connecting Haymarket Station in Edinburgh with Queen Street Station in Glasgow. A series of such viaducts, as well as embankments and tunnels, allowed the creation of an almost flat route between the two cities.

@gbhnews these are viaduct rocks! They were part of the old Alaskan Way Viaduct along the waterfront in Seattle that we tore down as unsafe after many decades. (This story may remind you of something and was indeed similar.)
Anyway I went down a few times to watch in person - it really had defined the downtown waterfront for decades - and one time I decided to collect some viaduct rocks. I even got one of the workers to verify that yep, that’s genuine viaduct! xD

if you're wondering why the waterfront has four lanes of traffic (not counting bus-only lanes), before, with the viaduct, it had 12.
(3 top level, 3 middle level, 2 underneath, four next to it.)
Since the temporary ferry terminal walkway went down last week I've been checking in on this one former support column, because:
This is the last standing piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
That's why it's where it is and why the new lanes bend around it but in a way that is clearly temporary. The asphalt sections will become large planters once that last viaduct piece goes down and they can relocate the lanes to their final intended locations.
And now that the new overhead walkway is open, they'll actually be able to do that soon.
If they ever need to take the old viaduct out of storage in the Battery Street Tunnel and put it back together it'll be missing a piece xD

Taken on my walk yesterday. This is Hewenden Viaduct, a former railway bridge. Its 120ft high, hard to capture on camera, even with the 12mm lens I used for this! The foundations are another 65ft deep so its a huge structure! One of the tallest viaducts in the UK i think . #architecture #landscape #WestYorkshire #Yorkshire #hewenden #viaduct #bridge #photography #arches #nikon #cullingworth
The now unused viaduct over the Valentia River in Co Kerry caught my eye away back in 2019.
