System Administration

This marks the end of the semester - if you followed along over the last few months in this thread, then I hope you had some fun and perhaps learned something new. If you want to revisit any of the topics, here's the entire semester's playlist of videos:

youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDa

But remember that some topics didn't have any videos but had a few useful links on the course website:

Thanks for sharing!

People working on Linux or the BSDs (or illumos based OSes, etc), are you using two monitors? And, if so, what do you use them for?
I'm trying to understand if it makes sense to keep two monitors on my desk

Please boost

Here's a #Linux #networking question for you: what's a lightweight way to allow an HTTP request to an arbitrary *user*-provided FQDN, but to prevent the connection being made if the FQDN maps to an RFC1918/private IP address?

(The relevant command here is #curl, but I don't think that matters as it doesn't appear to have a flag to say "only connect if the IP is /not/ inside these subnets".) #sysadmin #devops #network #hostnetworking #sre #systems #platformengineering

@ttuegel I refuse to make estimates as a #sysadmin and #IT professional before I have all the necessary facts on the table.

  • I also explain to potential clients that I do this because I want to actually give them an accurate estimate and not end up with preventable cost overruns i.e. when a wall turns out to be massive steel-reinforced concrete and not acoustic-insulated drywall, because I've yet to see floorplans that actually and properly note these things down!

Interesting.

Collabora CODE server won't install on Alma Linux 9 ... beeecauuuse their Repo gpg key is using a SHA1 hash and Alma 9 says Nuh-Uh.

*Blink *Blink

Now I can set the policy to use SHA1 if I want to, aaaand I don't really want to.

THey're going to make me run this in a docker, aren't they.

System stats are important because they allow you to make obvious assessments of your assets through a visual means.

Like this one container that was consuming almost half the CPU on my server for no reason I could determine.

A simple restart kicked it in the pants and got it back to normal.

I love stats! This sure beats the days of MRTG.
