howdy, folks - it's been a bit since our last #hachyderm infra check in.

stuff in motion:

- ditching #terraform cloud & tf for #opentofu and #atlantis. we are just about to import our dev environment and put it through its paces.
- bringing #postgresql under ansible management. the team has been doing awesome work, and we've started to spin up dev nodes using the new playbooks. soon: production!
- moving #DNS zones away from AWS route 53. we chose bunny DNS as our provider and have been doing basic tests in dev. we'll likely prep our records for production this week with a plan for a cutover in one of the coming weekends.

and if you filled out our volunteer form and haven't heard from me in a bit - you're still on the list. we'll onboard a new batch of folks in the next couple of weeks.

My daughter is a PhD student in psychology and she was explaining the controversy around social emotional learning (SEL).

Apparently it is unliked by conservatives because it encourages everyone to have their own voice and have their truths be witnessed and seen by their classmates and the teachers, and vice versa.

Which, these stupid people say, encourages kids to believe they are trans. So no good. We can't have people sharing emotions.

As a coincidence I got to a part of Allison Pugh's book that talks about SEL as a way to cope with the demands of data collection and procedures that surround teachers. The effort to squash SEL is fought by more SEL.

It made me think that the tech industry is sorely lacking in SEL. Maybe I'll try to slip an exercise in during our next Reliability Matters session.

If someone wants to make me lose respect for them as a Manager, being a repeat no-show to a scheduled and repeating 1:1 meeting will do it.

A typical excuse is that they had some other meeting. Or was banging on some other thing. They've been late once or twice, but this is like the fifth time just not showing up.

One problem is that they do not accept meeting invites. So not only is there not any notification about them, the calendar is preternaturally false because they only selectively accept meeting invites from other people.

They're online. But I'm sick and tired of asking if they are coming to the 1:1 or not. So many things like this I am starting to sound like a broken record and that just makes me feel like I'm vulnerable and putting the spot light on me.

Week 7, The Domain Name System, Part III

In this video, we try to wrap up our discussion of the Domain Name System by addressing the nature of the root nameservers, looking at various different resource record types, observing reverse lookups, and thinking about how we can have assurance of authenticity and integrity of the #DNS results returned to us via #DNSSEC.

I have become really depressed about my joke of an attempt at a career in tech.

But today by surprise I had a pre-sales call with someone who studied opera and voice, and now I don't feel as alienated or ashamed.

There are lots of musicians in tech, but not that many opera singers. We should stick together or something.

Week 7, The Domain Name System, Part I

In this video, we are beginning our discussion of the #DNS, the Domain Name System. We go back to the early days of the internet when copying /etc/hosts from system to system was the way to resolve hosts, and we cover the structure of the domain name space and the creation of the top-level domains.
