A hot and muggy walk on the North York Moors today, making good use of public transport to revisit two stone circles we haven't been to for 25 years and a stone row that we skipped back then. The Esk Valley train line and the Coastliner bus service got us to the Low and High Bridestones and Breckon Howe barrow on Sleights Moor (walking up from Grosmont) and then to Blakey Topping stone circle (walking from the Hole of Horcum).
14 miles of sweltering hot southwest Dartmoor, from Shaugh Prior to Yelverton, taking in 3 tors and numerous prehistoric sites. Finally got to visit Trowlesworthy Warren stone rows and cairn circles, an itch I've wanted to scratch for a very long time, as well as revisiting old favourites Ringmoor Down and Brisworthy stone circle.
Grey Wethers #StoneCircles. Legend has it a flock of #sheep turned to stone by Belus the Sun God to punish a greedy peasant.
‘…every Midsummer Eve, at midnight, the stones take their former shapes, and, as sheep, graze till morning upon the green slopes of Sittaford Tor…should anyone succeed in shearing one of these sheep ere sunrise, its fleece, if sprinkled with water that may be found in a deep rock basin on top of Kestor, will turn to gold.’
