Posted from @AllysonShaw@pixelfed.scot because I’m having myriad issues with @pixelfed and I’m not sure how I feel about posting there. I took this photo of the Stones of Stenness yesterday morning. #StandingStoneSunday #SilentSunday #standingStones #Orkney #scotland #neolithic #SacredSpace #LandscapePhotography #Sunrise

Autumn in the pass of the two stones for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Bwlch y Ddeufaen is so named for its two impressive monoliths, but there's more going on here; near the eastern stone there's a fan-shape of small standing stones, barely tall enough to see over the reedy grass. Millenia later, Roman soldiers marched through this pass where pylons now stride. The past and present leach into each other here.

Standing tall on a hilly ridge in the northern part of Portugal's Algarve, Vilarinha 2 is a gorgeous red sandstone menir, part of an alignment of four. Wave-like serpentiform carvings can still be seen (on the lower part of its left edge & centre).
