#Maine - #EasternTrail

"The Eastern Trail is a 62 mile multi-use, non-motorized greenway, that connects Bug Light in Casco Bay, South Portland to Kittery, Maine. Approximately thirty percent of the trail is off-road, and the trail is a part of the #EastCoastGreenway which will eventually connect #CalaisMaine to #KeyWestFlorida, approximately 3000 miles. The Eastern Trail is currently composed of 21 miles of off-road trails on the former Eastern Railroad bed with the remainder 41 miles on public roads.

"The entirety of the Eastern Trail is built to ADA standards. The trail surface varies between pavement and stone dust/gravel. Most of the trail is 10-12 feet wide, with some sections with an 8-foot width. There is a 30-inch opening between the bollards at entrances to keep out motorized vehicles, but wide enough to allow access for wheelchairs.

"The off-road section connecting Scarbrough to Saco privdes access to the 2200-acre Scarborough Marsh, which is Maine's largest salt marsh. Heading north on the trail from Pine Point (ME-9) or south from Eastern Road in Scarborough provides access to this 2.5 mile stretch of trail.

"Heading south from Pine Point Road, the trail crosses the York County and Cumberland County boundaries and users can walk/bike from Scarborough, through Old Orchard Beach to Saco, where the current-off-road trail ends at Thornton Academy in Saco, approximately 6 miles from the Pine Point kiosk.

"There are kiosks at 3 parking areas, that give some history and points of interest along the trail. For example, the Eastern Trail is built on the old Eastern #Railroad line that was built in 1840 and abandoned in 1945. Also, Charles Lindberg flew into the now abandoned Scarborough airport several times. And, a trestle once carried open air trolleys from the rail line to Old Orchard Beach for summer tourists."

As a sort of tribute to my late Grandfather I've been ripping his CDs. I found a three disc set of The Essential Johnny Cash ('55-'83) and have been slowly listening to it.

I haven't yet come upon the few Cash songs I know. But I did discover Rock Island Line which is entertaining. We have a former Rock Island line running through our 'burb as a rails-to-trails conversion. Rock Island it's the road to ride.

1. Kiddo is becoming a very good driver
2. Fantastic long run while he attended the beginning high school graduation as a band member. I chose an unpaved part of the trail today. I wasn’t sure how this would go after the 5K race yesterday. Very happy with my effort 💜
3. Beautiful weather for graduation and my long run. I felt like I needed a couple more miles but my time ran out and needed to get kiddo from school.

1. Both eye surgeries are complete. I’m healing well & released from any restrictions I care about.
2. Returned to work today & was asked if I wanted to join an informal #Running accountability group. We set a goal for the month and share our runs.
3. I went for a run on #RailsToTrails & my pace wasn’t horrible considering how much time I’ve had to rest. I changed the data screens on my #Garmin watch so I can actually read the screens while running.

Ontario Bike Trail info please

We are planning a trip to Ontario (Uxbridge) next year to visit with a friend who lives there. We are planning on several biking days while we are there. The Rails to Trails is right there, but we don't know anything about it.

Does anyone know if there would be places to stay with safe overnight bike storage along the Uxbridge Kawartha trail? With outdoor eating facilities along the way?

Or is there a better route within reasonable driving distance?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I love biking and walking on "rails to trails" paths, but it seems to me a missed opportunity to have both rails *and* trails.

What if we ran small electric #trains alongside paths at low speeds and let children operate them? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children

People too tired or disabled to walk would have an option to travel through the park, and getting the next generation excited about trains could help alleviate some of the issues we have staffing public transit.

Shearwater Flyer Trail > Saltwater Marsh Trail > Lawrencetown Beach bike ride

The other day I asked if anyone had any suggestions for good off road bike trails in Nova Scotia, to which I got several really helpful replies. So.... As a result...

We had a great bike ride on part of the Trans Canada trail to Lawrencetown Beach from the Shearwater entry point. We went through the Saltwater Marsh area, which is gorgeous and teaming with birds. I wish I had video of it The trail is well maintained with quite a few benches along the way for any wanting to rest and enjoy the view. As it was 30.5ºC (about 87ºF), we were really good to arrive at Lawrencetown Beach where it was cooler.

Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge Over Fitchburg MBTA Line Wins Federal Design Grant
The City of Cambridge has been awarded a $2.4 million Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods (RCN) grant from the the United States Department of Transportation. The grant is for the design of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Fitchburg MBTA Commuter Rail tracks in North Cambridge. The project also includes planning and design of a multi-use path parallel to the rail line, creating connectivity to the bridge from many local points. The path will also provide more convenient access to the Alewife Red Line transit station.
