WTF!!! #DHS Tells #Police That Common #Protest Activities Are ‘Violent Tactics’

DHS is urging law enforcement to treat even #skateboarding and #livestreaming as signs of violent intent during a protest, turning everyday behavior into a pretext for police action.

By Dell Cameron, Jul 10, 202

"The #DepartmentOfHomelandSecurity is urging local police to consider a wide range of protest activity as violent tactics, including mundane acts like riding a #bike or livestreaming a police encounter, WIRED has learned.

"WIRED has made this article free for all to read because it is primarily based on reporting from Freedom of Information Act requests [#FOIA]. Please consider subscribing to support our journalism.

"Threat bulletins issued during last month’s '#NoKings' #protests warn that the US government’s aggressive immigration raids are almost certain to accelerate domestic unrest, with DHS saying there’s a 'high likeliness' more Americans will soon turn against the agency, which could trigger #confrontations near federal sites.

"Blaming intense media coverage and backlash to the US military deployment in #LosAngeles, DHS expects the #demonstrations to 'continue and grow across the nation' as #protesters focused on other issues shift to #immigration, following a broad 'embracement of #AntiICE messaging.'

"The bulletins—first obtained by the national security nonprofit #PropertyOfThePeople through public records requests—warn that officers could face assaults with fireworks and improvised weapons: #paint-filled fire extinguishers, smoke grenades, and projectiles like #bottles and #rocks.

"At the same time, the guidance urges officers to consider a range of #nonviolent behavior and common #ProtestGear—like #masks, #flashlights, and #cameras—as potential precursors to violence, telling officers to prepare 'from the point of view of an adversary.'

"Protesters on #bicycles, #skateboards, or even 'on foot' are framed as potential 'scouts' conducting reconnaissance or searching for 'items to be used as weapons.' #Livestreaming is listed alongside '#doxxing' as a 'tactic' for 'threatening' police. Online posters are cast as ideological #recruiters—or as participants in 'surveillance sharing.'

"One list of 'violent tactics' shared by the Los Angeles–based Joint Regional Intelligence Center—part of a post-9/11 fusion network—includes both protesters’ attempts to avoid identification and efforts to identify police. The memo also alleges that face recognition, normally a tool of law enforcement, was used against officers.

"Vera Eidelman, a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU], says the government has no business treating #constitutionally protected activities—like #observing or #documenting police—as threats.

"#DHS did not respond to a request for comment."

WIRED · DHS Tells Police That Common Protest Activities Are ‘Violent Tactics’By Dell Cameron

Attacking the restaurant and its patrons was fucked up, bigoted hate. And also cops and courts do not solve problems. 🤷‍♂️

"Three people have been charged after 20 masked #protesters allegedly stormed a popular #Jewish #restaurant in #Melbourne on Friday night.

The group of pro-#Palestine #activists allegedly ambushed shocked diners and staff at the Miznon restaurant on Hardware Lane about 8.15pm after splitting from a larger #protest on Swanston Street.

Police allege several of them were then involved in an altercation, with chairs being thrown, tables overturned and the restaurant's glass door damaged."

Heavily armed immigration agents descend on #MacArthurPark in #LosAngeles

"Dozens of immigration agents, some on horseback, others carrying rifles in armored vehicles, swept through MacArthur Park on Monday in an extraordinary show of force at the heart of Los Angeles’ #immigrant community.

"Heavily armored #BorderPatrol officers with a fleet of white minibuses partially blocked the streets surrounding the park, which has become a source of crime and drugs in the area in the last few years. #Activists with megaphones were able to warn locals at the park before the contingent arrived, according to police sources.

"The move comes days after President Trump signed a budget that will provide a mass infusion of funds to the Department of Homeland Security to ramp up its immigration enforcement to levels unseen before in the United States. Los Angeles has become the poster child of Trump’s mass deportation plan, as more than 1,600 people have been arrested between June 6 and 22.

"The agents appeared to arrive around 10:30 a.m. after amassing at nearby locations. Once they were at the park, they were met with crowds of people screaming 'get the f— out!' and 'get out!' #MayorKarenBass also showed up to the park, which sits just west of downtown Los Angeles. Activists, who have been on high alert for weeks, appeared to be prepared to deploy lawyers to the scene.

"At some point, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David Kim handed his cellphone to Bass. Speaking to the other person over the line she could be heard saying, 'You’re getting ready to leave? Can you leave ASAP?'

"Demonstrators began to chant, drowning out her conversation. When asked to comment, Bass said the federal immigration agents needed 'to leave and they need to leave right now, they need to leave because this is unacceptable.'

"When asked who she was talking to on the other end of the line she said it was 'the head of customs.'

"Bass handed the phone back to a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Shortly afterward, she boarded a black SUV and left the area.

"It’s unclear if anyone was arrested during the sweep.

" 'This was just one big, perverse publicity stunt,' said #RonGochez, a member of #UniónDelBarrio, an independent political organization advocating for immigrant rights and social justice. 'It was just to show force, it was just to take pictures.'

"The chaos on #WilshireBoulevard around MacArthur Park had mostly calmed by 11:30 a.m., though a few protesters and members of the news media lingered afterward.

"Mikema Nahmir, 28, said he was out for his morning walk at 11 a.m. when he saw two women running down the street yelling that '#LaMigra' was at MacArthur Park.

"Nahmir joined the group of #protesters who chased and yelled after the #military-style trucks. At one point, he said, someone from the truck shot out an #irritant toward him and another protester.

" 'L.A. is ours, this is our city,' Nahmir said. 'This is what my morning walk turned into. They’re terrorizing our neighborhood.'

"Live video from the scene Monday morning broadcast on social media showed a line of white vans that have been used to transport arrestees as well as several agents on horseback. Agents cleared the scene by 11:20 a.m. and it was not immediately clear how many people they had taken into custody.

"U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino, who has been leading the operations on the ground in Los Angeles, was present during the operation.

"Bovino, who is based near the U.S.-Mexico border along with others in the Trump administration, was sued last week by immigrant rights groups seeking to block what it calls an 'ongoing pattern and practice of flouting the #Constitution and federal law' during immigration raids. They say raids have targeted individuals based on race, lack #DueProcess and some practices are akin to #kidnapping rather than legal enforcement. A hearing is set for later this week in federal court.

"Asked for comment on whether any arrests had been made, a senior DHS official, said, 'We don’t comment on ongoing enforcement operations.' "

Police issue warning over #PalestineAction protests after group proscribed as terrorist organisation

Demonstrators expressing support for Palestine Action could be jailed for 14 years

by Archie Mitchell
Saturday 05 July 2025 11:52 BST

"The police have warned protesters against demonstrating in favour of Palestine Action after it was proscribed as a terrorist group by the government.

"#Protesters are planning to gather in #ParliamentSquare on Saturday holding signs supporting Palestine Action, according to campaign group #DefendOurJuries.

"In a letter to Yvette Cooper, protesters said: 'We do not wish to go to prison or to be branded with a terrorism conviction. But we refuse to be cowed into silence by your order.'

"But, ahead of the planned demonstration, the Metropolitan Police said the proscription means expressing support for the group is now a criminal offence in the UK."

1. I never understand why Israelis who leave Israel get attacked. Isn't that what protesters want?
2. I defended Bob Vylan's chant here and in person with my Rabbi as punk rock being punk rock, and I'm ok admitting I was wrong.

#Protesters line highway in #FloridaEverglades to oppose ‘#AlligatorAlcatraz

By MAKIYA SEMINERA
Updated 8:40 PM EDT, June 28, 2025

"A coalition of groups, ranging from #EnvironmentalActivists to #NativeAmericans advocating for their ancestral homelands, converged outside an airstrip in the Florida #Everglades Saturday to protest the imminent construction of an immigrant detention center.

"Hundreds of protesters lined part of U.S. #Highway41 that slices through the marshy Everglades — also known as #TamiamiTrail — as dump trucks hauling materials lumbered into the airfield. Cars passing by honked in support as protesters waved signs calling for the protection of the expansive preserve that is home to a few Native tribes and several #EndangeredAnimal species.

"Christopher McVoy, an ecologist, said he saw a steady stream of trucks entering the site while he protested for hours. #EnvironmentalDegradation was a big reason why he came out Saturday. But as a South Florida city commissioner, he said concerns over #ImmigrationRaids in his city also fueled his opposition."

#CommunityDefense Groups Take the Last Stand Against #ICE in #LA

Organizers argue that LA’s #sanctuary laws aren’t enough to keep their #immigrant neighbors safe.

By Claudia Villalona, June 21, 2025

"Across #LosAngeles County, ICE’s operations played out differently. When combat-ready federal agents gathered in large numbers at staging areas in Paramount and Compton on June 8, protesters swiftly mobilized collective resistance efforts and emergency patrols. Agents responded to large crowds with #TearGas, #FlashBangs, and so-called 'less-lethal' weapons.

"Organizers maintain that this grassroots mobilization sabotaged enforcement operations, putting agents on the defensive and preventing them from conducting raids for the rest of the day.

"As ICE raids escalated across Los Angeles in early June, sending #protesters into the streets and immigrant communities into hiding, the contrast between how the consequential weekend unfolded in different parts of the city was stark. Divergent outcomes in majority #Latino areas further east with a long history of organizing and those largely disconnected from grassroots support highlighted the crucial role of #CommunityLedDefense in the absence of meaningful government protection.

"Unlike Compton or Paramount, the airport-adjacent Westchester is geographically and socially isolated from more established community organizing networks. And while LA’s sanctuary laws prohibit local #police from working with ICE, organizers argue that the local law enforcement agencies can’t be trusted to keep immigrants safe.

" 'Workers need to know their rights, whether it’s at the workplace or at their home, and they feel empowered to exercise those rights,' said Flor Melendrez, executive director of the labor advocacy group CLEAN #Carwash Worker Center. Car wash workers, street vendors, and day laborers working in high-visibility, outdoor spaces face heightened risk for arrests as 'easy targets' for ICE raids, while often lacking access to critical resources and workplace protections. Organizers said more than 26 car wash workers were arrested across at least six businesses in the set of raids began on June 6."
