John Kenneth Galbraith's observation about conservatism is as relevant as ever.

"The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

Today, for #HolocaustMemorialDay, I want to reflect on "Nationalism and Culture" by Rudolf Rocker, translated by Ray E. Chase. This important work critiques how nationalism fosters divisions among people and serves the interests of those in power.

Rocker argues that nationalism is often portrayed as a unifying force, yet it frequently leads to oppression and cultural stagnation. He emphasizes that nationalism justifies state power and can pave the way for authoritarianism, ultimately hindering cultural development.

Moreover, Rocker contends that nations are constructs created by the state to control individuals and sever their connections to shared humanity. His insights remind us of the dangers of nationalism and the importance of solidarity in our fight for social justice.

For those interested in exploring these ideas further, you can read the full text here: theanarchistlibrary.org/librar

"Constant tutelage of our acting and thinking has made us weak and irresponsible; hence, the continued cry for the strong man who is to put an end to our distress. This call for a dictator is not a sign of strength, but a proof of inner lack of assurance and of weakness, even though those who utter it earnestly try to give themselves the appearance of resolution."

— Rudolf Rocker

A self-described liberal trying, and mostly failing, to say what "liberalism" means in the USA in 2024:

'I used to think the term “liberal” was realistic. It requires, at a minimum, generally voting on the Left and supporting individual rights. Believing in gender, race, and LGBTQ equality, if not perhaps also equity, reparations, and the like (which seem to fall more under the umbrella of “progressive” these days—left of the Left, if you will). Liberal means caring about your fellow human beings...'

This is literally the closest they get to defining liberalism in a piece that's about defining liberalism.

This is a very bad essay and as such it's been puzzling my brain all day. "...we need to be more honest with ourselves," says the author. Physician, heal thyself.

5/ Major update. The fired and resigning editors of the old #Wiley journal (Journal of Political Philosophy) just launched a new #OpenAccess journal (Political Philosophy) from the @openlibhums.

I track these journal "declarations of independence" in the #OpenAccessDirectory, and just added an entry for this one, near the bottom in chronological order.

I'm looking for articles or templates that folks might use to create a Personal Statement of their Political Philosophy, to challenge themselves and better understand their own political beliefs. To help them understand issues in a broader context and vote in a more intelligent and cohesive manner.

I'm sure that work has been done in this area, but my Google searches are not turning up the kinds of resources I would like.

Very happily following scientists, lefties, activists, journalists, neurodiversity and techies. But 85% of them are white, and I think that's not healthy as it limits my view on the world.

Do any of you have suggestions for me please? People of color I should follow, or Muslims / people of other beliefs than Atheists or Christians?

Geoffroy de #Lagasnerie: The State defends "its own" and it thinks, incredibly, that "its own" is the #police or the gendarmes, and not the victims, the citizens.

"The State constantly is putting itself in the position of making those who exercise their rights be perceived as problematic and illegal or scandalous actions be perceived as natural: seeing the body of the deceased or #demonstrating is natural but it becomes forbidden."

Micah White: "I believe it is very important never to protest directly against the police. Because the police are actually made to absorb protest – the objective of the police is to dissipate your energy in protesting them so you'll let alone the most sensitive parts of the repressive regime in which we live: politicians and big corporations. We must #protest more deeply."
