A quick illustrative #map on the implications of using different types of centroids in regional #demography #mobility and #migration studies.

Think about what you are emphasizing.

By using population-weighted centroids, you can emphasize the population perspective in the analysis instead of the geometry, potentially improving your analysis considerably. The distance difference is stronger in sparsely populated and remote regions.

📣 New paper 🚨
In "Frontiers of self-realisation. How (un)certainty and imaginaries shape fertility intentions in Italy and Norway", against the backdrop of low-fertility, Giacomo Bazzani, Lars Dommermuth, Trude Lappegard and Daniele Vignoli study fertility intentions and uncover a new type of children imaginary as ‘choice, pleasure, and social anchor’.

I wrote about why the Government’s Right To Switch Off is an enlightened move to aid a generation that’s borne the brunt of connectivity’s land grab - and canny politics.

(And why reactionary old fart columnists and old guard bosses need to get off Gen Z’s damn back all round, really.)

The Independent · Bosses will benefit if they leave ‘workshy’ Gen Z aloneBy Matt Potter

#Channel12 points out that #CBSdata counts #Israelis who left the country, did not return over the subsequent 10 months, and established their lives abroad, thus indicating trends rather than immediate causes. It also notes that the decision to #emigrate is complex and not necessarily tied to a single event, as such decisions typically involve several months of planning.

Overall, while the initial aftermath of 7 October saw a sharp rise in #PermanentDepartures from Israel, the rate has since stabilised.

Critics of #Israel argue that #Jews #radicalised by #Zionism often move to Israel as a fulfilment of #BiblicalProphecy but tend to leave during times of conflict, especially those holding a second #passport.

Israel is increasingly concerned about the trend of reverse #JewishMigration from #OccupiedPalestine, particularly at a time when the #demography of the state is a fundamental issue for the #Israeligovernment and #Zionist strategists. The movement of Jews away from Israel threatens the demographic balance Zionist leaders seek to maintain.

How the #American people got mean

The #technology story: #SocialMedia is driving us all crazy.

The #sociology story: We’ve stopped participating in #community organizations and are more isolated.

The #demography story: America is becoming a much more diverse country, a change that has millions in a panic.

The #economy story: High levels of economic inequality and insecurity have left people afraid, alienated, and pessimistic.

The Atlantic · Why Americans Are So Awful to One AnotherBy David Brooks

The good news is across the world fertility rates are falling.... and falls in fertility normally reflect better health care & better rights for women!

But the big Q. is how does a world with an (eventually) falling population pivot its economics that (for decades if not centuries) has taken a growing global population (of workers & consumers) as an underpinning logic or organisation.

Unlike climate change, demographic change is clear & unambiguously measured.... we need to plan!
